So today I pulled my lower dash panel off to run a wire to for my new GMRS radio. And I am greeted with this plug poking out of the OEM harness. Any of you knowledgeable folks have a clue what it was/is for?
Hard to say, for something that is optional. Our TJs are full of unused connectors scattered here and there since they don't make different wiring harnesses to cover all possible combinations of options.
Went on my first group ride recently and wanted to share my learnings of being lazy and using this plug to pick up 12v power to my GMRS radio.
You likely already know what happened. But for the rest of the forum members.... let me entertain you.
Every time I hit the brake, it cut power to the radio. the hot wire is indeed hot with the ignition on. But every time you hit the brake it would interupt the 12v supply. Which inturned turned off the radio. Took me until I got back to the house and put a voltmeter to it to figure this out, as it was frustrating as all get out until I put 2+2 together.
So now I am going to be rewiring this to a fuse block and relay, like I should have done to begin with.
Let my lazy effort be a lesson to everyone else. Cheers!
