Hello everyone first post here. I was active on another wrangler forum but it looks like this one is more active nowadays so I thought I’d ask here too. Removed my front pads to lube squeaky brakes and in wiping off the red brake squeal stuff (I’m using brake grease now) the top spring holder on one of the shoes broke off. Barely touched it and it broke so it was hanging on by a thread. See pic. Is it okay to install this pad without that top spring? Is that spring there just to hold it in the piston during install or is it also crucial for brake operation? Thanks so much for your help!

If you kept the receipt, get another set. That's a defect. I'd use it if it still fits tight in the caliper piston and doesn't move around.
p.s. DISCLAIMER:
I do lots of things I probably shouldn't.

I wouldn't risk it.

Yeah it keeps the pad and piston together, probably to keep it from rattling around or some other noises.

If my pads were fairly new I'd be putting it back on to find out how much noise it helped to stop. The answer to that would determine whether the wife needed them changed this coming weekend or not.

Thanks for the replies. I ordered some new pads from Blaine but won’t have time to install them and do the break in for a week or so. Need to use the Jeep meantime. If anybody thinks it’s unsafe please let me know. Seems like the spring probably wasn’t doing much considering how easily it popped off.

Isn’t that the tab that makes your brakes squeal when the pad wears down beyond the safe thickness?
No. This isn't the squealer tab.

Brakes are an important component of being able to safely operate a vehicle.
Brake pads are fairly inexpensive.

While it might work with the retainer clip missing, I wouldn't risk the failure for as little as new pads cost.

Yep I have them on order just won’t have time to install them until next week. My question is- does anyone know if the Jeep unsafe to drive until then without that little spring?

Shoot I ordered the pads from him and emailed him about it last night so I could send him pics of what I was talking about. Think I should call too? Don’t want to pester him…

If he doesn't get back to you by the time you need to put it back together, don't hesitate. You are a customer and if he's known for anything he's known for exceptional customer service. This call won't take but a minute. You can even try tagging him in this thread with @mrblaine .

Just gave him a call, told him the situation. He understood and said it should be fine for a little while until I can change the pads. I’m gonna go test drive it and if it makes any weird noises or doesn’t stop (ha!) I’ll report back for anyone else who ever runs into this random little issue. But Mr Blaine knows best! So should be good. Thanks for the responses everyone.
