What type of oil would you recommend?

I have a rear seal leak on my 2000 wrangler 6 cyl auto and have been using Mobil 1 synthetic. I have been told that if I stop using the synthetic oil that it might help with the leak. I have always used that Mobil oil so what oil would y’all recommend for a Wrangler with 155000 miles on it?

Mobil 1 and generally any standard synthetic engine oil is definitely known for causing RMS leaks on older engines. I'd switch to a "High Mileage" conventional 10W-30 engine oil, any major brand you can find will be fine. The high mileage types of engine oils contain special seal restoring additives that can actually restore a seal back to good operating condition, it's not a band-aid fix. I used Mobil High Mileage 10W-30 in my BMW that was leaking like a sieve through its RMS, the leak stopped entirely in less than a week.

Maybe its time to change the rear main seal?
Not always necessary when it can be restored by simply using the type of oil that will not cause it to dry out and shrink. Some engine oils tend to cause them to lose their natural sealing ability by causing them to lose their elasticity and and actually shrink. High mileage oils can actually restore them back to their original size and consistency, they don't simply plug the gaps with who knows what like cooling system stop-leaks do.

This stopped my small RMS leak

He clearly meant the labor charge. To which you would probably say: "You can't do your own work? You bought the wrong vehicle."
Nope, just wait for the next cootie check. Oh don't put words in my mouth there are plenty of words ready to come out.

So let me get this straight. The people here that have no problem spending money to lift their Jeep.

Then put on tires and rims plus a lot of other expensive things on their Jeeps are worried about paying $400 to have a shop replace a seal if they can't do it themselves?

I didn't want to start a war I just asked why not change the seal?

Just me but I would fix it and forget it. I don't want to put cardboard under my Jeep in the garage. I don't want to wonder if the oil under my Jeep was there before I parked at the store. I'm sorry I commented, I had the silly idea you wanted more than one opinion.

Why replace something when it can be easily restored to good operating condition. That point was made several times above yet you keep pushing that it be replaced. Using a high-mileage oil with seal conditioning additives is no band-aid fix, it restores the seal back to good operating condition.

He asked what type of oil to use.

Jerry is correct I my opinion, Definitely try the oil before you do anything else.
I had a suburban that used a Qt. in 600 miles when I got it, I put "high mile "
oil in and it got better. after 2000 miles it would only use a Qt. in 3000 miles.
