Why the hate for snorkels?

Eh, the stock air box does a fine job of keeping dust out. When I lived out West, I was out in the dust all the time. Never had an issue at all. Most people who throw snorkels on TJ’s are just doing it for the looks. 98% of people with snorkels have no need for them.
but have you seen how much dirt is in the air at the mall's ? :ROFLMAO:

Yeah I been looking around for factory air box. it's kinda hard to find I saw that enclosed air intake kinda figure it would do the same.
It's not enclosed and it has the POS K&N style air filter which barely filters at all. That type of air filter is bad news for those of us including you and I who live and wheel in dirty dusty desert conditions.

https://daveysjeeps.com/ is a good source for things like that.

This chart, and especially the bolded text from the testing lab at the bottom, explains why K&N type air filters are bad news for dusty/dirty conditions.

this is why I was upset about switching to the windstar intake. I was lucky though because AC delco still makes ford windstar filters. I figured if they make the best for the TJ, then their filter for the windstar cant be bad

Disclaimer......... this is only showing one vehicles filter. Different versions my give different results. But his testing is sound and logical.

Wow. The "EP" was a bit of a surprise, but really not much else was. Wix is #1 in my book, nothing wrong with Purolator or AC Delco either. Despite reputed improvements to Fram's oil filter line, they upheld their low reputation with their air filter, at least in this test.

Call me crazy but I like the look of a Safari snorkel. My TJ came with one though and would rather leave it on as opposed to going to the trouble to remove it.
I'd rather have it and not need it than need it and not have it.

Not being rude in any way, but this is a big misconception with a snorkel. If people are taking in water to the point where the stock airbox will allow, then water in your engine is only a part of your worries as all of your electronics would be absolutely fried along with you floating within the jeep due to how deep you really are. Some do it for the looks and that's fine, but when people say they NEED it, they forget about the other problems

I dunno, I had my old YJ in DEEP water one time about 2-3 inches above the hood. Water was flowing out of all the AC vents and I never had an electrical issue. Though I did change out all the fluids afterwards.

That doesnt make sense in my eyes because if you were that deep to the point of swimming there is no air under the hood?

I agree and me and my friends were quite shocked it didn't hydrolock. Granted it was only over the hood a few seconds, though it was above the headlights for several minutes . Water had to of been in the electronics as deep as it got. I did fry the clutch a few days/weeks later.

man im sorry to hear. Ive never been that deep but have always been afraid of what can happen. Ive seen videos of jeeps not using snorkels taking lots of water over the hood and nothing happened. I think the trick is to keep momentum so the jeep can somewhat push the water out of the way.

That very well could have been my case. I certainly didn't think it was that deep going in or I wouldn't have made the attempt. Grantes though I think the YJ had so few electronics that may have helped.
I would leave the top and doors Off from may till October every year no matter the weather and I never had an issue. Would try that with my TJ. I Already went through one clockspring.

The only reason I'd say @Claybirdd really doesn't need a snorkel is he's sitting on 35's with a 4" lift and a 1" body lift ...the thing won't even fit in my garage. It's huge.

If this were the case my TJ and many others up here would have died many times over.

sorry but i need to see it to believe it. and not just making a quick 10 second pass in water, im talking deep water to where your back is soaked sitting in the seat. The stock airbox is alot higher than most realize. In the end WHO cares, its your jeep do whatever you want to it form or function wise
