I find it ironic that people think that snorkels are only for water when they are excellent for keeping dust out of engines....is the water only idea an east coast thing?

Eh, the stock air box does a fine job of keeping dust out. When I lived out West, I was out in the dust all the time. Never had an issue at all. Most people who throw snorkels on TJ’s are just doing it for the looks. 98% of people with snorkels have no need for them.

Not really, in fact not at all.

In fact you'll probably get more dust into the engine with a snorkel being outside. If you had ever Jeeped in truly dusty conditions as I do in the desert on a regular basis you'd know the dust can easily extend 20-30' above the roof line, especially when you're not the lead dog in a string of Jeeps.

Whenever I'm out in the desert and see a Jeep with a snorkel I automatically think newbie.

Can you provide some data to show that snorkels keep dust out of engines better than the factory air box?

X2. I'd love to see some concrete evidence of this other than just what someone said on the internet.

Of anything, placing your air intake outside of the engine bay would make it more of an inlet for dust and particles.

Well from what I have seen, it puts the intake for the air box above road level, that is why 60% of military vehicles have a snorkel, there is still the normal air filter, it just puts the intake up high were there is less dust....

The dislike may be from the impression it gives that the driver thinks it’s a u-boat and is going to accelerate the death of another member of the already thinning herd of TJ’s.

Military vehicles are multipurpose/multiterran vehicles. If we were really concerned about dust, we would not have our vehicles in Iraq ;) trust me, I blew that dusty shit out of my nose for weeks afterwards.

You're not paying attention, don't kid yourself. The military isn't stupid, their snorkels aren't there due a mistaken belief there's less dust 24" higher up. Snorkels are installed so their vehicles can cross fairly deep water... after having waterproofed the axles, transmission, transfer case, etc. If you had any experience driving in very dusty offroad conditions you'd laugh at the claim there's less dust at 72" off the ground than there is at 48".

Not to mention dust clouds can extend up hundreds of feet off the surface.

Im not getting into any debate about function as i do not have enough knowledge on the topic.

The vast majority on this forum do not think snorkels provide any benefits and are a waste of money. Then you have the people who think they are ugly.
There are many things that split a community a few examples are. Cold air intake, throttle body spacers, tunners, and a few im missing.

At the end of the day its your money and your jeep. Please do whatever makes you happy. But please do not try to change people's minds. Its like trying to convince someone x is better than y. You will find x fans and y fans.

Hey now, some of us fall into both of these categories.

Well put. I haven't been on here too long but I've read this, or something very similar, several times already so I figure they're usually from you.

This is good too, as long as their happiness isn't putting themselves, anyone else or any Jeeps in danger.
