How to sound deaden the interior of your TJ

FYI: for everyone who is scared of the noico I live in Southern California and my Jeep has sat out while I’ve been at work on some toasty days. The thermostat for the exterior temp sensor has read over 100 degrees when I’ve started up the jeep on late afternoon so the inside was even hotter. There is no smell at all whatsoever. But to be clear I also covered the noico with the noico 150 closed cell foam and taped the seems. But no asphalt smell, no noticeable fumes.

Man this project is painstakingly long and tedious. The TJs tub contours all over the place. I finally got it done after 2 days. Taking my time and slowly cutting up smaller pieces to fit the jigsaw puzzle of a tub this Jeep has.

I used the Amazon Siless 80mil brand. 2 boxes got the tub and tailgate covered. Still need to do the doors. Might end up covering it like others did with the 100mil layering to sound proof it more.

Is that a B&M and did you make the xfer case shifter or did you buy it? Looks just like my setup.

Very well put together write up and details!

I have a hard top (had zero insulation) and installed a product from HotHead HeadLiner (see photo) and this Siless Liner 157 Mil Aluminum Foil finish car sound deadening & heat insulation throughout the cab. As you can see the headliner reduced the temp by 20 degrees and with the foil material throughout the entire floor, under the seats, under the console, in rear part of the Jeep reduced the temp by 10-15 degree but most importantly reduced the decibels inside the cab. As you mentioned my significant other also noticed how much quieter the cab is and most importantly the AC is not running on High to try to cool use off.

Hey ya , do you have a link to the Siless 80mil

Hello from Qatar

I'm about to start the process of insulating the interior of my 1997 as here in Doha temperature will easily hit 47C. But I had an unpleasant surprise when I took of the carpeting. On the passenger side there's rust on the floor and I can see through some tiny holes also... I want to do this right from the beginning, so my question is: what's the best way to tackle this rust since that portion of the floor is already so thin?

Thanks!

cut and replace metal to do it correctly...which sucks

Yep, that's probably the best route but I'm looking for the best way to do it... Should I just have the entire rusty area cut out, maybe a square shaped hole on the floor, and then have metal welded to the floor?

Dang, rust found you even in Qatar!

How high up the firewall were you able to go? I'm assuming you didn't pull the entire dash out? I find with my hardtop on the Jeep has this echo/hollow sound that appears to be coming from behind the dash inside and any bump it resonates and vibrates throughout the cabin.

Great write-up. I plan to do this to my Jeep, add the material and then add carpet. The previous owner had the tub rhino-lined. Will the material stick just as well to the rhino-lined surface? Anyone have experience with that type situation?

The stuff I used was sticky/gooey enough that I think it should stick fine as long as you use a roller wheel. I was going to say wait until a warm day and then saw your location!

Following @mots lead, I finished insulating the rear of my TJ today.

I used the Noico 80 mil sound deadening material as the base. I went a step further than most of these other guys though and used the Noico 170 mil insulation on top of it.

Here's some photos of the finished product:

Tomorrow I'm going to do the front, which should hopefully be easier than the back. I'll tell you, even with as pliable as this stuff is, doing the rear was time consuming, and a pain in the butt due to the curvature of the wheel wells. I had to do a number of smaller pieces to fill in the areas that the material wouldn't easily conform to.

It looks excellent though, and with 250 mil of material, this should make the inside much, much quieter.

Hey Chris,

Hope you're doing well. I'm planning on doing this upgrade to my Jeep but I have been unable to find the insulation you used. Any way you could help me? your link goes to the regular 80 mil deadner and upon going into their store I only see 150 mil insulation.
