I'm sure @mrblaine would be happy to field this question, but it's 10pm on a Sunday. I bet there is a knowledgeable person or two online that can answer this quick question...

Step 5 says to "remove the red dry patch from the inserts with a wire brush if present. The loctitie will not set correctly if the dry patch is not removed."

Idk what Red Dry patch is (Google shows skin issues), but it looks like a threadlocker product to me. Is this correct? Do I remove the red dry patch and apply red loctite?
Thanks!
John

I assume it's threadlocker which sometimes comes preapplied to bolts.

It'll look something like this on the bolt:

If your wire brush is dirty or has oil on it (I know mine are nasty), it wouldn't hurt to wipe the bolt off with Acetone after removing the preapplied threadlocker.

Thanks for the quick reply. I don't understand why I would remove preapplied threadlocker, but that's what I think the instructions say to do.

I'd follow the instructions. Blaine must have found that the preapplied threadlocker doesn't provide the same results liquid threadlocker does. If you wait and call BMB in the morning I'm sure he'll tell you the reason.

I just did this project, and yes remove the pre-applied dry red thread locker on the inserts with a wire brush. The red loctite included in the kit is much stronger than the preapplied stuff, and they will not work properly installed together.

You can see the pre-applied red thread locker on these.

Scrub it off with a wire brush, then clean them with brake cleaner. Let them dry. I applied the included red loctite to the knuckle then installed the inserts.

Makes sense. I have an insert setting now, per instructions. I haven't reinstalled the caliper while I wait on the loctite to set.

I let mine sit overnight, and they are not coming back out easily. Red loctite is pretty amazing stuff.
