I just replaced my gas tank skid plate last week. I sprayed and coated both the inside and outside with Rust-Oleum bed liner spray, I've had very good results with that in the past.I decided to drop my gas tank and skid to clean things out. Ouch, it's not going well. The front 3 bolts holding the skid on had to be cut. When carefully lowering the tank/skid combo, I snapped the fuel outlet pipe off the fuel pump. Obviously the plastic gas tank has no rust, but I'm replacing the skid. I vacuumed out at least 3 cups of gravel/dirt and the rust was pretty bad. I bit the bullet and ordered a new skid, along with the new fuel pump, and straps.
Any suggestions on ways to preserve the new skid? I'm thinking I'd add another coat of paint on top of the factory finish.
Every time I run into something like this, my wife just says, the PO must have had a "good old time" with this jeep. At least the frame and tub are solid, not perfect but solid.

those front three bolts you mentioned snapped off, I came up with a cool little trick to replace them with carriage bolts.
Normally you can't fit your finger between the frame and the bottom of the tub because it's too tight. I took a magnetic pickup tool, broke it off then bent it into a 90 degree angle.
then I put the bolts on the end of the magnet, fish it through between the frame and the tub and then turn it so it drops right down into the hole.
I also replace the strainers on my fuel pump taking the pump out of the tank which resulted in some problems which I just overcame yesterday.
I also replace my back brake lines and the sway bar bushings and the tracking bar bushings while the gas tank was out.
I did the front seat bar bushings today.

I'm an optimist... I see it as half still there...Wow! That’s like half gone.

Why do you consider the AX15 to be better then the NV3550? Just askin' I don't have an opinion but am curious.I took her to the shop to figure out the noise in the drivetrain. Turns out its bearings in the transmission. Now I'm shopping for an AX15 to replace the NV3550 that shat the bed.![]()
very nice! are you going to glass it to seal it?I built a box for the rear cargo area. Fits up against the tailgate so if it's locked you can't access. Bolted to the floor using the seatbelt mount. Mount a cooler on top on vacation and realized I needed some kind of shelf so added a slide out.
