A Story of Indecision and Frivolous Spending

How do you fit 5 kids in the TJ?
In all truth I have. They have skinny butts, but that was only a handful of times. When we wheel we have a rotation, 3/trip. In all honesty it can be a bit exhausting. But they enjoy it so much I can’t say no to them. Yours will get ther bro! Hopefully they’ll enjoy the excursions

Haha, my wife tried to talk to me about this the other day and said how will we fit three kids when it only has 2 back seats. I told her the same thing you just said... we'll let them take turns. That's just how it will go until one of them is old enough to have their own Jeep I guess!

Does the 7 year old and one other child need to walk the whole trail. Hence why they are a veteran spotter. :risas3:
You gotta do what you gotta do. “Hey kid, it’s you’re turn to walk. And you, get in, you can sit for awhile.”

I say the same thing, until they get their own TJ someday! Looking at that next year

Lucky you! My wife is the opposite. She hates that I spend money on my Jeep. She just doesn't get it, which I guess is fine, because I also don't get why she wants to watch "The Bachelor" or "The Bachelorette".

I think our wives would get along.

My wife went away last weekend with her best friend. I drove my youngest more than 500 miles on Saturday and Sunday for soccer. I'll use this opportunity to spend on the Jeep, I temporarily have some spending leverage and should not hear any complaining.

Sometimes my wife goes out of town for the weekend with the kids and I'm left all alone... I have to say, it's got to be the best thing ever! I get to spend all that time working on the Jeep without listening to anyone complain about it :)

Sorry you’re having issues man. But it sounds like you’ve gotten more time to really nail down what you want to do

I do indeed! And I found a good guy to install my Savvy lift and do the outboard shocks. He’s going to take it in right after Thanksgiving and have it done in around 2 weeks he said.

You'll have it back just in time to find a new supercharger under the Christmas tree.

So the shop I am planning on having do the Savvy mid-arm install agrees with Dave that we can fit a 12" travel Bilstein 5150 in the rear for the outboard shocks.

However, he mentioned on the front that we can put 12" travel shocks up there (though he said he won't order the shocks until he's all done with it and can measure the exact length needed). I asked him how he would even fit that in there, and he said he would weld on hoops to the top of the stock shock mounts, similar to what you'd use to run coilovers.

I've never seen this done before with the stock shock and coil spring setup (the hoops I mean). @jjvw, do you have this done to yours on the front shocks?

I've seen what this guy builds, and he's done some really amazing Jeeps with massive amounts of flex, so I'm not doubting him, I'm just curious about this, that's all.

I've seen where Blaine has cut off the top portion of shock tower and has extended the upper mount kind of similar to what is done on a rear outboard for the upper mount.

Yes, I believe that is what this guy was telling me when I spoke with him today. He does this so he can fit a longer travel shock in the stock location, which makes a lot of sense.

I guess I just hadn't actually seen it before, since all of the focus is always on outboarding the rears.

Are you stuck on Bilsteins? When talking to Blaine he said he used the 12” fox with remote reservoirs when outboarding for his builds, more spendy though. I believe @jjvw runs them in the rear too.

Not stuck on Bilstein's at all. Dave had wanted to use the 5150s in the rear because they are narrow enough to allow them to fit between the tire and the frame (which becomes an issue once you move the shock to the outside of the frame. However, being as though I have wheel spacers, I've looked and I have plenty of room back there.

I'm going to talk to the installer and see what he recommends. I wouldn't mind running Bilstein or Fox shocks. There is really no option to run Ranchos, as they don't make many different length shocks. When you look at the Bilstein and Fox catalog, they have tons and tons of different lengths and configurations, which is why you always see them on custom builds like this.

Personally I like the look of the Fox shocks better, I can tell you that. They're aluminum too, which is another plus.

Oh, and just incase anyone wants to see the estimate Novak sent me for their "turn key" V8 package.

Note that this doesn't mean they are installing it for me. They ship it on a pallet with the engine, transmission, cooling system, and everything already hooked up. All you have to do then is literally swap it into the vehicle, but there's no guess work whatsoever, as everything is already done for you.

I wondered why it was so absurdly expensive, but then I looked and found out that they're giving you a fully rebuild 5.3 and 4L60E transmission, which adds to the cost considerably.

Well that makes the supercharger look cheap doesn't it.
