Hey All,

I convinced my wife to let me pick up another TJ. I sold her on the strategy that I'd part it out and make a really nice Return on my investment. The 01 sport has some really good parts (124,7xx mile smooth running engine, Hard Top, Full Steel Doors, Dana 44, ultra clean CarFax & no wrecks, but it has a very rusty frame that, IMO, needs a full replacement.

Anyone ever take on a part out opportunity like this and would you be willing to share some of your experience with me?

I have the space for it, 10+ years of TJ experience and a few Jeep techs that I can draw on. I'm now wondering whether it is more advantageous to instead flip as is for a small return or go the full part out? I don't have a lot into the Jeep.

I'm going to settle on a direction in the next day or so and would like to hear some opinions.

Thanks Jeep Peeps

DT

How is the tub? If you do decide to part...I might be interested if the tub is rust free.

I think its tough to make money replacing a frame. Its a TON of work and just finding a frame will take a while. Replacing a frame is more about wanting to keep the vehicle on the road for yourself, than trying to do the work and flip it. Your time is worth something...

all depends on what you have in it, hard top -$800-1200+, full doors probably$400-500, Dana 44 $400-$600...who has to do all the work removing, chances are if the frame has rust the bolts will be a pia to remove everything else.

I sincerely appreciate the advice!

I think my investment is fairly low based on parts value. I'm sort of looking forward to and leaning towards parting out instead of trying to sell it as a quick as-is flip. It will give me a live Jeep to tinker with and some experience on components I've never fooled with. Thanks much for the feedback.

I think the Tub is A.O.K I got a light up from underneath and pulled the carpet and to see the floor pan. I didn't see any rust but I'll take a more closer look tomorrow now that I have it back at my place. Will follow up on the tub. thx

Late follow up. Tup looks in great shape. I think I saw one little surface rust by the tail gate under where the carpet was.... smaller than a dime. I just started the process to pull parts so maybe in a few months if you're ready, we can chat. I'm going pretty slow in the process..

Thanks

How the heck did you find one with a Dana 44, I've been looking for 4 months and every junk jeep I find has a Dana 35.

So, I call dibs on the Dana 44, or if reasonable, I'll buy the whole jeep.

I was going to part out whatever I found as well.

Man I know I got lucky! I just look at CL everyday looking for something cheap I can pick up and do some flipping. Took me a few months of checking CL every day and multiple markets to find this one, which is my first. This one just happend to be in my back yard and was something I could afford to convince my wife I could make some money with. I found this mid 50's guy who brought his High School sons Jeep to Fortec to get the tailgate fixed. They showed him the major rust damage and since it couldn't be driven, he just left it there and listed the Jeep on CL. I picked it up as quickly as I could but not before trying to convince him to hire out the frame swap and sell the thing for $9K.. I tried to be a good Jeep friend first. He just wanted to move it. I already have the Dana 44 in my '00 so happy to work something out with you. How quick do you need one? I've never pulled an axel and I'm just starting to part it out slowly for some cash and to tinker with it. I've really just stated yesterday harvesting some stuff and getting ready to list. I'm just starting with the doors and top to bring back in some cash then was going to take my time with the rest.

Winter would be awesome, I was going to strip, clean, and refurbish it before putting it under my jeep. I've been hunting so long I was almost ready to drop 3500 on an ECGS D489 axle. But wheres the fun in letting someone else build your stuff, minus the locker.
Just keep me in mind once you start getting into it. I'm not going to rush anything.

Cool. You are 1st. If you need sooner, then I’ll figure something out and move faster.

Dan.

Awesome, I'm going to keep hunting craigslist and FB market place for the time being. Most of the people I ask either don't know or tell me the gear ratio. And a bunch of people just say "jeep wrangler, its cool". And that's all there is to the ad.

Understood. Do you know how to check equipment using the VIN and checking the factory build sheet? I can sometimes get sellers to provide and do my own research. Let me know if you need the website

Sure do, and even had one guy absolutely refuse to give me one. Sent him the link to the build sheet site, he did the thing and sent back the listing without the VIN. Super shady.
People are weird these days, they'll list something with no details and get annoyed having to answers questions that should be included in the ad; or just giving me the stinking VIN to get all the info I need without wasting anyone's time.

Frustrating but the hunt sure is fun isn’t it?
