Can someone tell me what this vSeeBox / Superbox hype is all about?

I've been hearing a lot from folks lately about switching to vSeeBox or Superbox so that they can ditch all their streaming services and get access to movies, shows, and sports on demand without paying a dime.

Now granted I understand that is piracy and it is illegal, I wanted to know what the truth is to all of this, how easy it is to use / setup, and how it even works. If one wants to watch a show on Hulu for instance, how does that happen? Do you have to download the Hulu app and open up Hulu? What about YouTube? Can you watch YouTube and other stuff commercial free?

Right now I'm using an AppleTV for all of the stuff we watch but I'm getting very sick of paying for streaming services especially when 95% of the stuff they churn out these days (just like everything else in the world) is unwatchable trash.

There was a thread about these things a while ago. I have one of the Superbox things but haven't ever hooked it up.

I just keep hearing that if I go with one of these, I can stop paying for all of my streaming services which in and of itself would make it worth it.

This guy I talk to every day at the gym has one and he always raves about it. Says he can watch anything he wants for free without commercials or anything.

I have a neighbor who recently got a vSeeBox from another neighbor. They both rave about it. I've been over to watch a few ballgames since he's gotten it and can say it looks to have limitless access to anything and everything. Honestly seemed a little overwhelming given we only watch select sports events and a very limited handful of history or science shows on occasion.

Don't know who turned the first guy onto these things, but the 2nd neighbor has now started pimping them to everyone he knows and they're selling them like Heisenberg's finest batch of blue meth (feels like I'm watching a drug deal every time I see them passing boxes and cash back and forth in the driveway). I have no idea where they get them and it's all word of mouth to my knowledge.

I did a little research and saw it's illegal, and that there are also concerns about having these things tied into your wifi and the risk it poses to anything that uses your wifi (understandable). I gave it very brief consideration, but given I'd still need to pay for internet, the fact TV just isn't that big of a deal for us and most importantly, the potential security risk, dismissed it quickly.

Doesn't @Apparition have one?

Following along - A friend of mine told me his aunt has one, and that yes, you can watch everything for free with one $300 purchase of the box itself. I looked into briefly, but am not tech savvy at all so had no idea what I was looking at. We're paying a stupid amount per month for internet and netflix, hulu, paramount, Fubo and HBO.

I would probably suggest using a VPN at the router level in your home if you use one of these. That's what we do even without a vSeeBox and it works great.

No, I don't. But a guy I work with was talking about one and I mentioned it a while back. His son has one and says he watches whatever he wants with it.

I got a call from a Netflix rep once wanting to sign me up for a subscription. I told the rep I had something much better than Netflix.

Rep asked, "What? Like HBO?"

I said, "No. I have a library card."

Totally stumped the sales rep, didn't know what to say. He just thanked me and hung up.

I thought when I'd bought mine that there were still things you had to pay for but it was 2 years ago so I could be wrong. I need to go find mine and try it out.

First order of business:
If you don't know about Bitchute, you should look into it. There are myriad movies available to view or download. Many of them are current, but there are hudreds of old movies that are in the public domain. I am a fan of Film Noir, and I have downloaded over 200 Film Noir movies from the site. There are westerns, classics, dramas, all kinds, You might find it interesting if you are not picky, and especially if you like older movies, as I do. I've seen very few things produced in the last 25 years that were worth my time.

If you are interested and would like to know which channels have good movie archives, DM me and I can send you some links.

Second order of business:
I'm not trying to moralize or be a jerk here, just adding to the conversation hopefully without pissing anybody off, and truly speaking from a place of curiosity. And if I am hijacking the thread, please just ignore this and scroll on, seriously. I do think that the overall conversation brings up some philosophical questions.

We don't have any of those premium services. I pay for a monthly i'net connection and sometimes would rather not have that. I am no Luddite (though I have respect for actual Luddites). I have a degree in IT management. I know computers. All of my machines run Linux. I jumped ship from the MS ecosystem years ago, now trying to extricate myself from the ABC/Google ecosystem. I do not consider myself superior in any way because of any of this. That said ...

I really don't get the whole thing about paying large monthly fees for multiple subscriptions for different services, then complaining about how much it costs. If one has sufficient income to cover it, that is one's choice and I don't pretend to judge it, but I have known people on limited income who go without necessities to pay for those services. I have to question if all of that is really necessary; key word being necessary.

My above comment about the library card really was not meant, to the sales rep, to be a joke. It's funny now, but I was dead serious when I said that to him. I guess my question is: Are we, as a society, that starved for distraction that we are willing to pay large amounts of money to be distracted?

And if, we are, then: Why are we needing that level of distraction? And what are missing out on by using that kind of distraction from real life?

Just something to think about. No need, even, for a reply. Throwing my two cents in, and that's likely more than it's worth.

ETA: In the interest of honesty, I do pay a subscription to Amazon Prime. I do this because where we live many things that we need - equipment, household goods, etc. - are not available, so I do this for the shipping benefits. I have very seldom used the video service and when I do I usually come away feeling bad for wasting an hour-and-a half or two of my life.
