What did you do to your TJ today?

So I’ve been having cooling system issues again. Not the typical kind, instead of overheating I’m unable to reach operating temperature. Lol Last time this happened it was a faulty thermostat that had failed, so I assumed it was the same thing this time. I purchased a new thermostat housing , gasket and thermostat in anticipation of the job. Today I pulled the old housing off and the thermostat was fine. I replaced it along with the housing and filled it back up with coolant and I’m still not getting an increase in temperature. Back to the drawing board I guess.

Last time this happened it was a faulty thermostat

I replaced my thermostat with a Napa and same issue. Pulled it out. Bought one from O'Reilly's and Advanced Auto. Tested all three 195 degree thermostats and they all started opening around 130 to 155.

Bought a Robert Shaw sourced from Flowkooler and zero issues since.

What temp thermostat are you putting in?

I replaced it originally when the first replacement thermostat failed. I rebuilt this engine a couple years back and put a new thermostat in thinking new = better but apparently that doesn’t always compute lol if I turn the key to accessories the temperature will read correctly until I start the engine and the water pump kicks in then back down the 150 ish within a minute.

I’m with you Mac. I almost tossed this one in a pot to test it but was racing the clock between jobs to get it back together so I could head to my second job on time. I saved the other one so I can test it anyway.

What temp is it getting to? Do you have any sort of OBD tool to see the exact reading? May be a faulty sensor as there is literally nothing other than the thermostat that can cause that, short of being in the artic.

Couple more things off the check list…so almost prepped for the 2 week road trip to the sth island again. Oil change this weekend.

Let’s be honest though…. I’ll probably create another list before I go in January 😂

It gets to 150 ish while the engine is running. If I turn off the engine and then turn the key back on to the on position the gauge will read the normal 200 until I start the engine and the water pump starts to flow. I’m thinking Mac might be onto something with the shitty thermostat opening too soon. I guess I’ll have to spend a little time and dig into it some more when time allows.

Until you finish your research, can't hurt to run without a thermostat in these temps...

That may also help to test the coolant temp sensor is reporting accurate info.

Short-hand …😂
I am an ex signwriter so when I made my to-do list sign I made it so it’s easily taken down for that exact reason 😁

Ordered the Barnes no body lift skidplate. When they get the engine skid in i will order it.

Now I could be like @macleanflood and tell y'all some half baked story about my wife getting in the safe and taking my stash and getting a tattoo.

But that ain't how it went down at all.

I manned up and did it behind her back and she will never have a clue.......... I hope.........:cool:🤫🤫
