Curious on the cost savings by prepping like you already did. Was thinking of a full repaint.

I did the metal work and took care of a few dings then feather sanded the nasties on the leading edges of the hood, grill, fenders and windshield frame. The painter is doing normal prep, prime and base/clearcoat for 3K. Found a backyard guy with a legit painting space. Hit a few locals for prices and they were all 5k to 10k even with my prep. F that...

Like TJ4Jim said above, it depends. I have buddies who do body & paint work and unless they know you and trust your work, they're not going to assume you did it right before bring it to them. If you're thinking of going that route, talk to the potential painter about it, which you should do anyway before handing over cash for a potentially bad job. Anyone can spray paint. It takes knowledge and experience to know how to make it look good and last.

Any idea of color & clear brand, or is it going to be single stage?

I typically use PPG products and the last 2qts I bought, 1 color, 1 clear, cost $1,000.

I shot our 4 Runner in 19 with an PPG OMNI catalyzed urethane 7 qts. sprayable , 5 qts. epoxy sealer primer , masking , tape etc... for $1000.
I used a $60 Lowe's Kobalt HVLP gun that was a game changer .

My last paint was in '22 and prices had jumped significantly. If I remember correctly, the color was a little under $400, and the clear was pushing near $650. The part that really made that offensive was that I had intended to have the repair done 2-3 years before, but I put it off and then the prices jumped, adding about another $700 to the job. 🤦‍♂️ IDK where material prices are sitting now, but I bet they haven't come down any.

Yeah one of my goals with building my shop is getting a space I can shoot paint.

For us amature, DIY guys, a Harbor Freight carport, plastic on the ground, & air flow/filter/temp control can go along way for a few hundred $.

Two of my body shop buddies started out painting like this. Drive a grounding rod into the ground and chain to the car to ground it. I've seen some clean paint jobs done this way.

Thought about that since I have the shop space but I kept asking myself if I really want to do that but after painting my ultralight last summer the answer finally came back a definate NO. Getting to old for the gymnastics involved.
