100 mph in a TJ; have you done it?

I know this is an old thread, but I remembered I had this pic of my dash when I was going 105+ in my stretched TJ on 40s. I’ve GPS-tested it and my speedo is dead-nuts accurate. Does push high on the revs though. Fastest I’ve gone is somewhere north of 115. I backed out because I was hitting redline—my poor 4.0.

And with a check engine light😂

I did it once. Once. Indicated, not GPS, but my speedo is spot on at lower speeds, with 235 tires, so I think it was a real 100mph.

6cyl, 5 speed, ‘97, bone stock.

Engine and drive train were loafing, it’s a tall 5th gear. Hard top was on.

I would describe the overall feel as “mildly terrifying.” I didn’t feel like I was just about to crash and burn, but rather it was a definite possibility. My TJ cruises comfortably at 85, so it wasn’t all that much faster, but I’ll never do it again. Just wanted to see if it could.

I feel like I probably would have topped out around 110-115 drag limited, but the speedo doesn’t go that high anyway.

Has anyone gone faster?

WHY?

You’re absolutely right, I never really thought about the speed rating on the tire. I’m sure there’s a safety factor built into the rating though- probably at least 1.3 percent—so I bet I could’ve gone 130 before it became a problem. ;)

The thing is, speed ratings on tires are a moving target. The speed rating is calculated at a certain pressure, temperature and load. Change any one of those and the speed rating can go up or down. Just like the other ratings, each one affects the other.

I do have to laugh , a tire speed rating discussion on a Jeep TJ Forum . I can't wait for the lateral acceleration portion of the test ! .... :ROFLMAO:

Don't think I've ever hit 100, but 90ish on open interstate, elevation, and a slight downhill. My LJ actually used to feel pretty solid at speed but my steering box has loosened up a bit so it's getting sketchier.

Drag force and engine power are both linear to air density, but I mention elevation above because wind noise is proportional to the power dissipated by drag force so it's noticeably less noisy and I'm more prone to speeding at elevation because quieter unconsciously feels slower.

Beautiful rig, Swish. Do you have a build thread?

I've spend considerable time on track with a motorcycle, gets the speed thing out of my system. No desire to push my TJ past 70, even when new and in stock form. With the aerodynamics of a cube, it wouldn't take much of an unexpected side gust to create a really bad day.

I rode liter bikes for 15 fifteen years and never stopped liking speed.

Safety at speed largely comes down to the quality of your rig, and desert gusts aren’t a problem when you have dialed in hydro assist steering, a swayloc, and well tuned outboarded shocks. Adding the turbo put the rig in balance rather than create an imbalance.

Blaine’s suspension and steering work has made the rig ride better than it probably should, and I assume a properly setup stretched rig rides even better.

I'm not too sure about that. When I took my 99 over 90 m.p.h. it was at 6100 ft. elevation , The Jeep sounded like a B - 17 , balls to the wall , in a 75 degree dive.
It was LOUD .
