Trailer sizes

Overkill for the LJ/TJ, but I've got a 14k SureTrac full width/drive over fender 20'+2'.

Don't buy a trailer JUST to haul the TJ. You'll get upset when you need to haul something bigger.

I'd recommend at least a 20' (18+2) 14k pound trailer with drive over fenders. And make sure it has wood flooring. Metal floors are slicker than a cats ass when it is wet.

My next trailer will be a 28' low boy gooseneck as a secondary trailer.

I have an early 2000s 20' 10k Kaufman with brakes on both axles. It was a special order with crossmembers every 16" and have owned it since it was a year or two old. Before that I had a 16" 10k with brakes on both axles.

Actually looking at downsizing for use behind the motorhome. Will probably pick up a new 14' 7k single axle tilt deck.

I was looking at some 7k 4in frame trailers with wood decks but I think I rather get a 10k trailer with a wood deck preferably with brakes. Haven't decided what to get yet. Mostly will be towing the TJ mainly but maybe a SXS or some project cars.

A 7k would likely work for most.

But a 7k trailer, factor in the weight (~1500lbs), and you're limited to 5500 lbs +/-. of hauling capacity, that is almost 80% of the trailers limit.

A TJ is somewhere around 4k lbs, add your tools, your coolers, anything else, that 1500lb of available capacity can diminish fast.

Exactly why I always recommend a 14k trailer. They are not much more than a 7k and will give you anywhere from 10-11k of cargo capacity. The 14k one I sold in the spring weighed in at 2,600#. I bought it new early fall 2024 for $5,200 OTD delivered.

I had my trailer built for a TJ only. My reasoning was that if I got a 18' or 20' trailer my buddies would want to borrow it. So mine is 14' long and the only thing I wish I'd done differently was I should of gotten 5k axles instead of 3.5k axles. My trailer weighs 1400 lbs leaving me 5600 of capacity.

I've been running this trailer for 10 years. It's a 2015 custom-built Kaufman 20' / 10k, with a 102" wide deck, no dovetail, and drive over fenders which I built. I've also done a custom tongue lock, custom ramps with an expanded metal deck which allows me to easily pull the motorcycles on, and a vice mount on the fenders. It's been a fun project. The box contains something like 1000 pounds of spare parts, tools, fluids, jacks, and such.

With the rig on it, it tips the scales at 10,600 pounds...

And despite running 14 ply / G rated (Edit: Correction 12 Ply F-Rated) Carlyse tires, it blows tires with regularity - usually when making the trip to Moab at 80. It's simply overloaded.

So I've now ordered a new custom Kaufman Deluxe. Same 20 ft, 102" width, drive over fenders (which I'm reluctantly having them build), but a 15k pound, 8 lug beast. For reference in the context of this thread, the build cost at about $8,600.

Should be done in 2 or 3 weeks, at which point I'll make the trek over to SC to pick it up.

Other than my capacity issue, I love this thing and am sorry to be giving it up. It would work well for anyone towing a normal Jeep - just not the 6400 pound pig I drag around... :(

The brakes and bearings will be much more trouble free on the larger axles as well when used with the lighter load of a tj

Just setting here thinking that the short just enough length trailer for a TJ will not allow you to move the TJ around on the trailer adjusting the tongue weight. A 18'+ trailer would allow you to move the TJ back to take weight off the tongue of the truck/SUV pulling it.

I've never had any issues with my trailer only being 14' as far as loading it goes and have towed it with everything from a Grand Cherokee to a 1 ton truck and then a RV. Even with the stretched WB (100") of my current setup.
What it does limit you on the other types vehicles you can haul.

Are you selling your old trailer and what did you use to make your drive over wheel covers?

Where did you get the bolt down wheel chock?

I was givin a 7k car hauler but was going to just buy a couple 5k or 7k axles to swap out to give me a little more capacity on the trailer just case?
