Crushed synthetic winch cable

My cheap Amazon winch got a mind of it's own and decided it would "pull" for a split second every now and then all by itself. So, before I figured out what was going on it had pulled the cable VERY tight on the spool and actually detached the end of the cable from the anchor point. The synthetic cable is crushed pretty good in places from overlapping itself. Is this a problem? I can massage the cable back into shape & it's not cut or frayed, but I want to make sure it's not compromised somehow by being crushed like that. Anyone have experience with this?

I don't use the winch very often and it works fine (other than the random activation which I plan on solving with a battery disconnect hopefully) and I would rather just put the cable back on the spool instead of purchasing a new cable or winch.

Here's the cable, winch and cable attachment point.

Perfectly fine. Drum loop works better than the mashed terminal anchor.

How did the winch pull the cable from its anchor point which is attached to the same drum that does the pulling?

I had the cable hook attached to a shackle that was on the flat tow behind emergency cable attachment point. Bent that pretty good!
In this pic it's just got a Velcro strap holding it in place.

I misread your question. I think the outer wrap that got pulled tight happened to be overlayed with the end of the cable at the attachment. It cinched it down incredibly tight through a couple layers on the spool and was pretty hard to unspool.

Typically when we see that, it was due to the cable under load running next to the drum flange. It sinks down into the lower layers and wipes the line right out of the anchor terminal.

I can see that. OP’s response also eluded to that.
