I rented a car in July to drive up to Tennessee from Dollar (which is owned by hertz). I returned the car, then I got an email a couple of days later that there was damage to the car. They sent photos of the driver's side mirror where the plastic piece that covers the bolts was missing.
I never noticed it was missing it had to have fallen off if the car had been hit the side mirror would be smashed. They sent me a bill for $1,500. I tried to call the number many times that they sent I could only get voice mail.
I called my insurance company, I sent all the emails etc. The claims person emailed me, he can't talk to anyone at hertz either. He told me that I won't be paying a dime because my coverage will pay 100 percent of the bill.
He said they won't be paying 1,500 for a piece of plastic. Then he told me to never buy hertz etc insurance. For once maybe things will work out.

Isn't hertz the company that started doing that AI scanning bullshit for damage
I'm not sure but the claims guy told me they add a bunch of fees like administrative etc. He said we don't pay those.
Yes, I recently read that. Wet cars look like dents to it.
Last time I rented I did a video walk around and pointed out anything I saw.

We rented a car from Enterprise a month ago and the rental guy did a video walkaround with us there before we took possession of the car. I videoed him videoing the car, just in case.
All I wanted to do was replace two swamp cooler bearings before lunch.
Pre soaked everything two days prior with PB Blaster. Twisted an allen wrench nearly 180 trying to get the set screw out of the pulley that wouldn't budge. Cut out the the set screw part of the pulley with a carbide Sawzall blade, then went at it with a puller, denied.
Sliced up the pulley to spit it. Held the chisel with visegrips to save my fingers and hit my fucking thumb anyway, and now its really swollen and not nearly as good as it once was.
The win is I got it split and off without ruining the shaft, and carbide Sawzall blades are bad ass. But my thumb is not in a good place, and I have to finish it up tomorrow

I have several swamp coolers that I maintain and have learned to have a complete stock of parts because around here they only get stock in at the start of the season and by late summer there’s not much left. Even getting replacement coolers is gettin tough. Also having my own stock saves trips to the hardware store.

Usually I get lucky. I might have 80+ coolers to look after on top of everything else HVAC. I buy 2 cases of Zoomspout a year to avoid this
I am fortunate to have a few good supply houses local that are stocked year round.If I have to replace the shaft its getting a new unit.
Usually by the time the shaft goes there’s not much left of the rest of the unit. I treat the pans on new units with tar and use sacrificial anodes. Main issue for me is the failure of the electronic controller. When they fail I install an old fashion analog switch. Most of my houses have been converted to central air but I have some where that cost is not worth it.

You do realize , you have to be of a certain skill level to know what Zoomspouts and their refilling means ! ....
Owning rentals and a TJ and not paying someone to do everything requires developing multiple skills and acquiring the right tools.
It was 100+ and humid in central CA where I'm at right now. Then it dumped rain for a bit. Now it's shitty humid.

Shoes piss me off. My boots I bought in April:
They're like 100$. I bought a pair of Keens in a similar style and they don't fit right on one foot. So I spent even more on even worse shoes, trying to "buy once cry once".

Most of the time the Chi-Com Ariat boots are pretty good , Those totally suck . I think they could be fixed with a highway flare .....

Yeah I've liked them but I normally get like 9mo out of them I think. They're getting cheaper though, I noticed this pair had thinner laces than they used to. I think I've gone through 3-4 pairs since I moved out here in 2023
I might have to give the keens another shot and see if I can wear them in more. They're heavy though.
