The Valve springs showed up and I replaced all 8 of them. I don't have a tool to measure how much boing is left in each spring, but I was able to remove the old ones easily, and getting the new ones was a pita. Also, all of the old springs were 1/16" to 1/8" shorter than their new counter parts. Hopefully this is what has been causing my woes. While I was at it I measured the lift of each valve with a dial indicator and they were all spot on so I can rule out the cam.

While waiting for the springs to show up I made a custom intake. I did not like the small restrictive filter I was using. Its a Donaldson knockoff I found on Amazon, duel filter element, meant for diesel tractors. With the longer intake tube it will not pull in super hot air directly above the exhaust manifold. Also, I do not like intake sucking sounds, so hopefully this will quiet that noise down a bit.

I placed the intake high and towards the front of the jeep, just like all jeeps do. It should pull cool air from around the headlight and hood gap. I would rather set this jeep on fire and push it off a cliff than take it through deep muddy water, so I'm not worried about sucking in water. This style intake is also designed to catch a bit of water and drain it out the bottom and not send it to the engine..

So now its time for reassembly. Putting it all back together to see if its runs better.

The valve springs did nothing, lol

An actual mechanic friend came over, and within minutes noticed something wrong with the distributor. With the cap and rotor off, there was about an 1/8 inch gap between the inductor and magnet... I probably have these terms wrong, but basically the spinney magnet bit was too far from its receiver. There were also scorch marks on the rotor. The previous owner had retrofitted the points system to a newer electronic ignition. Guess it was the wrong parts. So, I ordered a new, electronic distributor from kaiser willys, nothing retrofitted. Installed it, and now it runs like the devil. (some will get it.)

So, a few pictures of the little GPW in the wild!

I have learned that you really can’t put a price on knowing people who know things and are kind enough to help. Great news and great pictures!

Beautiful! I like the contrast of the old paint on the grill (is it original?). What do you think of your suspension?

edit: catching up on this thread reading back a few pages. Also good job sticking with the engine issue. That was a a lot of work.

The grill is original, I wanted to keep a little of the old patina. I'm glad I did.

For the suspension On road manners are fantastic. I got it up to 51 on some back roads and it was stable and smooth. Off road was a little firmer than I expected, about the same as a TJ, I've gotten spoiled by my JL. Slow speed was bumpy, but not bouncy at all and I had a few chances to get it up to 15-20 mph where it really started shining. I was more focused on every sound, vibration, noise and feel of the jeep. This was its first real time out.

The front shocks are tunned by Wayne at Alltech Motorsports and are Very smooth... The rear socks are off the shelf fox and have no tune. This winter when Its cold I'm ship the rears off to Alltech to have a matching tune and add a DSC.

Couldn't agree more! This is rolling art and the nicest Willys I have ever seen. The balance of old and new is absolutely perfect. Modified where it needs to be, and left alone where it should be.

I'm honestly a little overwhelmed... Ever?! It's pretty cool, but ever
