Hi all! New to the community but not new to TJs!

I recently bought a 2000 TJ Sport 4.0 that already had a good amount of work done to it.

•4" suspension lift
•35" MT Baja Boss tires with KMC XD 17" bead lock wheels
•Steinjager adjustable track bar.
•1.5" Transfer case drop kit but no SYE
•Aftermarket fixed lower CAs on front and back (don't know the brand)
•Also has a drop pitman arm which I am going to replace with a stock one

Other than that the rest of it appears to be stock.

The PO had told me about a wobble between 35-40 mph, I test drove it and it was more around 30-35 mph but whatever. I got it home and did the steer test and saw that the front track bar was loose at the axle and at the jam nut. I also noticed that the rear track bar was bolted but not tight at all. I tightened everything up and there was no more wobble.

However, the Jeep was wandering pretty bad and being difficult to keep straight in addition to throwing me all over whenever I hit the slightest bump. I checked and the tires were sitting at around 40 PSI. I saw that there were no sticky weights in the rim so I assumed there were beads in it. I took it in to get tires checked out and balanced and turns out there weren't even beads in them. I took it in and the tires balanced at 26 PSI, driving home was so much smoother even at 75 mph however I'm still getting wobble. It's happening intermittently around 30ish mph when I'm slowly getting up to speed but If I'm accelerating quickly up to 40 or 50 it doesn't happen and also happens at times when I'm braking but not always.

I checked my alignment last week per the instructions found here on the forum which were extremely useful and saw that it had no toe at all. I adjusted it so it's at 1/8"

Caster angle appears to be 6º on the driver side and 7º on the passenger side.

I am planning on upgrading the steering linkage later to something more heavy duty as it is still stock the tie rods aren't busted but the boots have a couple holes in them. Other than that, there doesn't seem to be anything concerning with the current drag link and tie rod.

The lower CAs on the front and rear have some play.

I can't say for sure if this the dreaded death wobble, but either way I'm trying to isolate the issue and get to the root cause of it without throwing money and parts at it.

I'm attaching some photos and videos of the set up and what's going on. I've done a lot of perusing through the forum and threads to try and get this figured out and decided it was time to reach out and see if any of you fine folks can offer some insight! Thanks y'all!

i wouldnt bother trying to replace the bushings... if you can try to go with a quality adjustable arm. start with the front lowers and go from there.

Yeah, I agree with not bothering replacing the bushings either. I'd definitely replace the whole arm. Appreciate your input!

Definitely ditch the drop pitman arm as planned. The video looks like you may have some slop in your steering box also, it can be adjusted some but be careful not to tighten it to much as the gear will fail. Any control arm bushings that need to be replaced I would seriously consider just replacing them with new adjustable arms. If you plan on wheeling much get at least one end of the arm with a flex joint like a Johnny Joint. If you haven't already look up the torque specs for all the tie rods, track bar, control arms ect. and go through them all to assure they are tightened to spec. Lastly make sure everything has grease.

Yeah, the steering is not as tight as it should be or as it was on my old TJ. I know how to adjust it and know to do it in very small increments. I'm planning on doing some wheeling at times but nothing crazy hardcore so I've been on the fence about going the flex joint route on the control arms. I know in the end it'll be worth it. I'm looking at the Core 4x4 arms. Any recommendations?

Quick Update:

I have lower control arms, sway bar bushings for the rear and front and an OEM pitman arm on the way.

I drove it to Target yesterday, about a 20 minute drive on side streets and the highway without the problem showing it's face. After I got back, I put a couple pumps of grease in the tie rod ends and ball joints as well as tightened up the steering box just a smidge and this morning the shaking was significantly worse. I don't understand how either of those things could've caused the issue to manifest like that.

I also re-did a dry steer test just to ensure nothing else was loose and everything is still tight. 🤷‍♂️

Check your u-joints on your steering shaft. I’m fighting that on my LJ. My problem is the middle joint, just to the right of the bearing and bracket. Having a hard time finding one of those. Intermediate shaft I believe.

Got home and did another dry steer test. The front track worked itself loose the rear bar I had tightened up was completely loose again. I took out the bolt and it was stripped to hell. I got new bolts for it and tightened it up along with the front bar. Loosed the gearbox back to where I had it before. The steering shaft has a little bit of play in it and seems like it’s a bit loose going into the gearbox. Could this possibly be what’s causing my problem?

Either way, I think I should replace the front track bar regardless because I know that the one I have is garbage.

Wanted to throw in a quick update.

I replaced all four lower control arms and the drop pitman arm with a stock OE one. Happy to say she now free of any wobble and is driving straight as an arrow!!
