I still don’t understand why they called it “the butts” or “pulling butts”. Any insight into that origin?

The term "butts" when referring to patching targets on a live-fire range originates from the practice of setting up targets against earthen mounds or artificial structures designed to stop bullets.
Here's why it was called the "butts" and its evolution:

  • Archery Origin: The word "butt" initially referred to a mound of earth used for targets in archery, according to Wikipedia.
  • Expansion to Firearms: As firearms evolved, the term was adopted for rifle ranges, encompassing the structures (often earthen berms or concrete walls) placed behind the targets to ensure safety and prevent bullets from travelling beyond the range.
  • Target Pits: On live fire ranges, the area where targets are set up and then lowered for scoring and patching is often referred to as the "pits" or the "butts". This is where target pullers work to retrieve, mark, and patch targets, according to this YouTube video.
Therefore, when one mentions "patching targets in the butts," it refers to the process of repairing and preparing targets for subsequent shooting in the designated area (the pits) at a live-fire range.

That’s no job in Aviation,
i was in Gunnery one year when we destroyed the berm and put rounds through the generator that ran the moving targets.

one of our guys shot the target so throughly when i went up after him the moving target was only a 4x4.
