Military Memes

Ick what da hell is this
Dining In, formal service member only event that begins with solemn readings and toasts and ends up a drunken free for all.

Grog is made from a long list of specific ingredients. That sock is is filled with spices, to represent the dust from soldiers long marches.

My ANCOC classes were required to plan and host one the night before graduation. We would keep a bottle of "seed grog" from year to year to start it off.

President of the Mess fines people for breaking the Rules of the Mess, or for any reason whatsoever. Fines can be money, a portion of grog, a dance, a witticism or a poem, etc.

We would end with a tribute to our Fallen Comrades, small mini-ceremony that ends with Taps. I'll get a speck of dust in my eyes every time. No crying.

Best time ever.

The best Dinning In I went to was in Korea and I had a great time busting my Sgt Major for messing up on a few things. I had an appointment with him the following week.
Then while I was a instructor at BNOC we had one for every class and as their cadre I of course had to attend... But not the same when you aren't a student.

I think I only had 5 Dining Ins total in my career other than those when I was an instructor. Had to make SSG before I was invited. But I knew some that had SGT's allowed at them.

@lBasket it's a tradition in the military and you don't really have a choice as to if you go or not. And drinking the punch bowl is just part of the fun. You normally attended one with 2-3 rolls of quarters in your pocket. And you'd leave with little to none at the end of the night. And YES you were shitfaced by the end of the night most times.
