Today my 99 2.5 died while out driving and I thought I was out of fuel since my gauge is not accurate. It died in a sputtering manner which led me to that conclusion. But, upon adding fuel, the problem continued. It turns over but sputters right out. On a random occasion it starts and runs for a few seconds (long enough for me to get it out of the road) but then dies again.

How do I know if my fuel pump is working and what else could possibly be the problem?

Thanks in advance. image.jpg

TPS (throttle position sensor) gave me grievance on a couple of occasions in the same manner as you’re describing on my ‘05 LJ / I-6 4.0
• I ended up carying a spare TPS with me
• now , I’m not certain if this would apply on your 2.5

Tomorrow I’ll start with checking the fuel pressure and go from there. The fuel pump sounds like it’s kicking on but I’ll check the fuse for it just to be sure.

Fuel pressure is normal so the fuel pump should be good. Next I’ll test the throttle position sensor. Just need to get a multi meter.

Funny thing, when I went to test the fuel pressure, the damn Jeep started right up and purred like a kitten. 🙄 🤣

Next time the Jeeps engine sputters to a stop OR will not start; try pouring some cool water onto the CPS (Crank Position Sensor).
Try to restart; IF the Jeep restarts and runs the CPS is going bad and needs to be replaced.
This trick will only work so many times before it doesn't work any more.

Finally got around to checking the throttle position sensor today and it reads just fine on the multimeter. So, I’m gonna say screw it and replace the crankshaft position sensor and cross my fingers.

Part didn’t fit….the plug on the new one is just slightly different. It’s an NTK and I ordered it from Rock Auto so I’m having them send a replacement. Pic online is the correct plug so I’m hoping this one was misplaced somehow. IMG_5232.jpegIMG_5240.jpeg

I decided to file down the one I received from Rock Auto. Connection is snug but she starts right up. Now to drive it with a tow strap handy just in case it wasn’t problem after all. IMG_5265.jpeg

Just for anyone who has to do this job here are a few pics of the sensor’s location.

The plug is near the firewall on the driver’s side.

The sensor is on the bell housing on the driver’s side.

And for those that are curious, this is what it looks like where the sensor mounts

Rockauto sucks IMO. They've never sent me the correct part and expect me to pay to ship it back. Paypal says NOPE.
