How much wear do you allow off-road tires and which tires are best?

I can’t seem to find a thread on this.

I think the picture below will show how worn my tires are, at least as best you can see from pictures. The spare earned an early blemish, so it stays off the ground so you can compare the ones on the ground with it to see how worn they are. With that much tread wear how much off-road traction am I giving up? For the most part, it doesn’t see pavement except to the off road park about 30 miles away. I am starting to go through the tire shopping/selection process so feel free to also comment on tire selection.

My mission is rocks, gravel, dusty conditions sometimes and mud sometimes. I don’t really like slopping in the mud, but we see it in Winter and spring here.

The current tires are 35 12.50-15 Mickey Thompson Baja MTZ P3 with unknown mileage. They have done pretty well as is, but didn’t get me through mud a few weeks ago with both axles locked. No big deal, it was an easy rope pull, but I would have thought that I would have gone right through it with no trouble.

We have hit Summer here and the odds of dealing with mud for the next three or four months are very slim. For that reason, my thinking before hearing your opinions is that I don’t really need tires until Fall.

So….. would you replace these tires, and what would you replace them with? IOW, you get to spend my money instead of your own.

Thanks for your input, comments and opinions.

@MBDIAGMAN

I run mine to 9/32’s then sell and use proceeds for more.

If you run a spare then 5. If spare delete then 4.

I’ll try to remember to get the date code Maclean, but they look to be live tires, pliable, no cracks, etc. it has also been stored out of the weather.

I haven’t gotten the date code yet, but I will. The tires are soft, no cracks and seem to be good live tires. They have 9/32 on three of the four on the ground and 10/32 on the other.

They are Mickey Thompson Baja MTZ P3’s.

Can anyone comment on how they sell the used ones? Craigs List? At the tire store?😳

Can anyone give me any ideas on what to expect to get for them or any ideas on how to peddle them.

Thanks

Local Facebook Marketplace or Craigslist is where I list mine. I list mine for $100 each and hope for the best.

I couldn’t find a date code, but they are nice, pliable with no cracks. They are live tires.

I am in a sparsely populated area where Craig’s List doesn’t seem to draw much interest on things. There is a tire store in the town near the off-road rec area that has used off-road tires around. I’m sure they wouldn’t offer much, if anything for them, but they might make some sort of offer that I could then get them to throw in mount and balance, then find the best online to the door price I can.

The current set is very well balanced, I hope I can find a tire kid with a desire to balance them that well.

I truly appreciate the feedback and comments. That said I want to order tires soon and would like very much to hear some opinions and recommendations.

I will be on dry rocks and dirt more than mud, but I can’t avoid mud altogether so I need something that works there too.

I have had one suggestion in this thread to duplicate the Mickey Thompson Baja MTZs that are on it and that is what I would do right now if I had to order today, but I would like to hear opinions, advice and even a little debate before I make a decision that I live with for a few years.

Thanks to everyone here for all that I’m learning from you guys.

BTW, the size is 35 12.50 R15.

Also: I drive it about 35 miles to the off-road rec area.

Anyone know anything about Kenda Klevers tires? They look really aggressive.

I have no problem spending more money if I can get better performing off road tires.

You can ask 10 people for a tire recommendation and get 12 different responses.

Cooper STT Pros, bfg KM3s, Goodyear Wrangler MTRs (I think discontinued in 15" sizes), mickey Thompsons are all popular choices around here. Someone runs Klevers but I don't remember who. Probably hard to go wrong with any of those choices.

I've been eyeing the Klevers MT2 myself, but reviews are next to impossible to find. But everything I've found seems positive. There's a guy on YouTube called Six Feet Under Fab that runs them in North Carolina and really likes them.

Thanks Baldwin. Is it safe to assume that they wheel in wet weather a lot in the Carolina’s?

Another one in that size that seems to bubble to the top is the Gladiator.

I replaced the 4 off-brand 35x12.5R15 M/T tires (country of origin = Cambodia) + 1 old BFG M/T KM2 that came on the TJ Rubicon I bought a month ago (avatar pic) with a fresh set of 5 - 33x12.5R15 BFG M/T KM3 two weeks ago. Those no-name tires "looked good" but I wouldn't trust strength of sidewalls for what will be a dedicated trail rig destined for use in remote rocky terrain. I chose 33" vs 35" to better suit 5.13 gearing with 42RLE auto overdrive plus to get me an inch closer to the ground for entry/exit (RE 5.5" long arms with 1" BL). Knowing how much the last owner paid for those budget tires, I advertised them on local (rural) FB page for $400 to include the used spare and quickly sold those at full asking price. A win for me and for the buyer too, who wanted "big" 35"x15" tires for nephew's old truck. Sometimes, it's just about the look...

^^^ Agreed, I ran 3 sets 33x12.5R15 GY MTRs (both asymmetrical and symmetrical) on my former 2000 TJ with good results in rough rocky stuff. With those now NLA, I went with BFG M/T KM3 this time, noting the OEM set of KM on my 2017 JK Rubicon are still holding well. From what I've read online, KM2 were an improvement over those and KM3 more-so...
