What subwoofer setups do you guys have?

I’ll disagree with a few points in this thread and it’s backed up by IASCA builds if you want to check it out. For SQ, you want to focus on front stage. John at CDT would not disagree.

The winners of sound quality competitions for car audio with have a very nice set of three way components driven by a digital sound processor/amp (no crossovers required) and one or two smallish subwoofers. Having anything besides subwoofers behind you reduces sound quality. The cone surface area of subwoofers is not paramount. Box design is crucial. A nice set of 8” woofers in a properly engineered box will out perform generic 10s, 12s, etc—but you have to pay to play or understand quite a bit about how sound moves. I have two 8s in my Ram that handle 1000wrms each. Most people think I have a high power pair of twelves. It helps that they are sitting in a $1700 enclosure built by Gately audio.

That being said most people could care less about what I just typed, but if you do I’ll have sound system details to come in our TJ build thread.

Your assessment is correct, but if you are putting an IASCA quality sound system in a Jeep Wrangler it should only be to haul it to the car it's going to be installed in.

I understand that they will never be an ideal environment, but almost no car is while in motion. We have a couple hundred pounds of constrained layer dampener, insulation and mass loaded vinyl in our Ram and it does very well going down the road.

For the TJ, we’ll probably only do CLD and insulation to the tub and some sort of lighter weight insulation to the hard top, as it can’t afford the extra weight like a Cummins. Still going to throw 600w at a set of 3 ways and 600-1000w to a nice sub/ enclosure while ditching the overhead speakers. The hope is to make it sound as good as a TJ can without adding too much weight.

For anyone interested, the three ways will consist of a 5.25” mid-woofer in the factory lower dash area and a 3” mid/1” tweet in an enclosure closer to head level, but in a manner that doesn’t obscure vision. We’ll be 3d printing those enclosures and would be able to reproduce them for others here once we have a solid design down.

I have a JBL Basspro Nano under the drivers seat. I have the fold and tumble seats and had to add 1 inch seat risers under the seat frame so a bar running across it didn't hit the sub.

As far as getting power from the battery to the sub, I drilled a hole in this general area, used a grommet that fit the hole and was snug on the power wire. See the dimple? There are a couple there. You can see that area easily from under the dash and determine where you need to drill without hitting anything.

Do you have any pictures of the JBL Bass pro nano you installed? I'm looking at doing the same setup and I'm curious how it fits under the driver seat. My 2003 TJ does not have the fold and tumble so I think I have enough space. Just curious. Thanks!

I have the JBL nano, but I have it in the center console where the factory one was. I 3D printed a bracket to mount it and my GMRS box, but the factory storage cubby is too deep now, so I am in the process of designing and printing one that is a little less deep.

For me it is a great low end to fill out the sound, but it is not going to rattle any windows.

Awesome.
Thanks for the images.
That nano IS super small.
Maybe I'll template it in cardboard before I pull the trigger.

I gotta have it under seat, I need the storage space.

I recently added a Pioneer powered 10",

PIONEER TS-WX1010A

It was $179 when I got it. Decent for a powered sub, though not very powerful. I had it installed, also have a tiny Alpine 4 channel, 45WX4 for the mids and highs. JL 5.25" front, Alpine 6.5" pods (roll bar mounted) rear.

Since it claims to have 300W, I thought it would work well with the Alpine amp. My installer said he had to turn the Alpine amp down to about 33% or the other speakers would be too loud for the sub. So Sounds like it's not *REALLY* 300W. Sounds really good though. He just suggested that if I want it to sound as good as it should, I could get a separate amp for the sub. Probably sound fine for someone that doesn't have an amp powering the factory locations.

Did the Kicker 6.75'' Subs blow out on you? I recently had one installed in my center console and I blew it the same night.Debating tinkering with the 6.5'' Skar sub or getting another Kicker center console sub.

I know it is a little bit late, but I went with a 12" Rockford Fosgate sub, and it is good for a soft top because you can basically unplug it whenever you want. Also, it sounds great, and you can still feel the bass, even when the top is off.

I sold my TJ in April of last year lol
