Can I temporarily turn my 99 TJ into a 2WD convertible?

Did all this, buttoned up and test drive, strange grinding sound only on deceleration still clearly there. Mechanic was wrong from his guess that something in front was eating itself up. I was wrong in six months of searching forums and research.
Front unit bearings look great. Almost new, Crispy and smooth. Transmission shifts great, no problems, fresh motor build running great.
I just don't know. Maybe transfer case? Throw out bearing? It sounds like front, And under your front feet. Out of ideas and tired.

Was the test drive with the front driveshaft in or out?

Uploading vids, front shaft does not move at all. Used ear automotive stethoscope on trans, transfer case while in gear. Sounded fine. If I hear anything it's loudest in rear diff.
Rear diff 10 milea or so I put new axles, new spider gears, every single brake component, new bearings and seals. fresh fluid, all dry, no leaks. professional shop changed my rear pinion seals awhile back.
I'm thinking now rear pinion??
That much sound transfer and literally sound like it's in front? To myself and a skilled mechanic??

Whoever did the pinion preload may have not done it right. I would redo it and probably use new bearings again as well.

Wonder if you maybe have issues in both diffs?

Starting to think maybe.
"Outlaw offroad" outside Huntsville- Madison replaced both front and rear for me few years and 10k back. Nothing but road miles and zero off-road since. No mud, no water. I'll post here Few years old fluid from front diff. Pics and pan residue here.

I once dropped a belly skid and pulled a transfer case because we were convinced by the sound under the seat that we didn't do it correctly when we did the raised belly and larger 241 install. We knew we had contact between the case and tub or at least it sounded that way. We beat the tub up way more than enough and the sound did not change one tiny bit. Still under the seat. We only found the rear diff made the noise by running it on jack stands and listening to all the moving bits.
