Rear Dana 44 question

I pulled my rear axel apart to do gears. It didn’t have the large slinger between pinion and pinion bearing like in the front, there is a shim but much smaller diameter. Two of the pinion preload shims were tore up and the outer pinion bearing was loose on pinion. Just making sure not missing anything here?

I was not sure if someone had previously been in there and something was missing based on the condition of the shims. I find that the schematics are all over the place on the Dana 44 since so many are in so many different vehicles.

Yeah that all looks like normal stuff. For pinion depth, start with the thickness of the shim that's between the bearing and pinion head and go from there. The other shim looking thing on the lower right of the picture is a baffle. If your master install kit has one, then use it (bump facing toward yoke).

Thanks, I thought it was just a torn up preload shim. I don’t think kit has a baffle, I just have the preload shims and the outlet slinger that goes between yoke and outer pinion bearing. Is the baffle needed?

If it's not in there then I wouldn't worry about it.

Edit: Actually, looking at the pic on my desktop where I can see it, that isn't a baffle it's just another shim . The deep indentation on it had made it look like a baffle.

Thanks for the info, I got nervous when the back is different from the front. The thinner ones got chewed up pretty good. Crazy how many different variations in design.
