While I was doing the smoke leak test on the tj today, I found this breather hose in the rear driver side wheel well. It doesn't go to the rear diff. Does anyone know what this is for?

This is helpful, forgive my ignorance, but does each break get one? I thought the rear brakes on this were drum breaks, what's the hose for?
Nipple on top of each axle. Front one is on the driver's side of the differential and usually runs up next to the radiator.

IF you trace the metal brake lines from each brake cylinder assembly you will find that they connect at a block (on top of the axle tube) with the brake line coming from the Proportioning Valve & Master Cylinder. On top of the block (where the three brake lines tie together) there is a nipple where the vent line is attached. The nipple is threaded thru the metal block into the axle tube creating a vent for the rear differential.
The hose is a vent for the axle housing to allow air to move in and out during heat cycles. The nipple it attaches to is part of the distribution block for the rear brakes, but it has nothing specifically to do with the brakes. We have a hose to prevent water from getting into the axle housing during deep water crossing where the axle is submerged. The hose is nothing more than a snorkel.
It goes right here, on the left side of the rear diff. Don't worry if yours doesn't look exactly like mine, normally there's brake lines running to either side of the axle from that little block (which for me now is just a spacer).
