Basket's Build

Little bit of rant here. I am losing motivation to stay in the "project car" hobby so fast. I am just so tired of getting ripped off by companies selling junk. In this one project (gears) I've literally thrown away:
  • 400$ in the shit Yukon gears and associated parts trying to make them work
  • 50$ in a vacuum bleeder that only worked once
  • 30$ on a air compressor line from Ace that just popped today
  • ~250$ in the other set of Yukon gears that ECGS seems to be trying to get out of refunding me (delivered 2/18)
This seems to be the case on every project I take on to some extent. It is starting to get real old and I'm really starting to wonder if my time and money is better spent elsewhere. If I had any idea what else I'd do all day I'd probably be considering it more seriously. Why is everything you buy complete dog shit nowadays?

Your first mistake is making a total of the money you spend on any hobby.

I'm assuming you don't go to the bar every night getting trashed and trying to catch std's from the town bicycles? Be glad you spend money for entertainment in ways that aren't actively destroying your health!

The hard truth is that if you enjoy doing these things, you have to get used to spending money on good parts, tools and equipment that both work well and will last. That also means having to figure out what good parts, tools, and equipment are. You have to spend time and money to save time and money. Buying good effective tools as you need them will increasingly equip you for future projects over time. Another important layer to this is figuring out who the beneficial teachers are.

Mike recently did a nice video on brake line flaring tools that touches on this.

Yeah this is part of the problem. If I want to get past this I need to learn that I shouldn't buy this shit on Amazon, or at Ace hardware. I'll have to check that video out and see what he says too.

Haha I normally don't but this is money I got fucked over on 🤣 which is a whole different thing in my head

That is true. Although it'd be a lot more satisfying getting food at a restaurant than this!! But yeah. You're right. Just a little frustrated this morning.

Once I'm deciding between driving the Jeep and MR2 instead of working on them both I'll forget alllll about this probably haha

Everything in that video can be purchased on Amazon. The key is discernment in making decisions on who to listen to. It takes time and an interest to build it.

Hmmmmmm well then I just suck at picking! Guess I really need to watch that video. Sometimes I think the shit I get locally is worse than the shit on Amazon.

It's like buying tools at Harbor Freight... You know if you're paying $0.25 for a hammer it mostly isn't gunna last...
Research and watch videos on tools before buying plus ASK here for recommendations. Obviously not all will turn out to be spot on but you'll stand a better chance. For me part of buying from someone like Amazon is the ability to return stuff when needed.

As you said once you take that first drive you'll be all smiles and will have forgotten about this.

Amazon sells all facets of quality. Like most things, you typically get what you pay for.

I feel this way about houses, though at least (in theory) they are appreciating assets. I'm on the fifth house I've owned, and each one has just sucked money out of my wallet with reckless abandon. The worst part is each time I do an upgrade or repair, the price of housing materials is directly inverse-proportional to the quality of the product. In that same vein, some recent events have redirected what little fun money I had for my Jeep into my house, so while my Jeep is luckily usable, rebuilding the new JK Dana 44 front is now a project for next winter. :cautious:

That does stink. Hopefully the money going into the house is something you can actually at least appreciate day to day

Bled the brakes today, filled the rear diff, greased the rear driveshaft, and reattached both the diff breather tubes.

All I need are upper control arms and to torque everything down after putting the tires on the back and it is ready for gear breakin. I just don't feel like dealing with these rubber bushings just to spend money on new arms in the new future anyways so I'm going to replace them now. Exciting but another week of waiting, hooray

If you're looking for new arms... I know a guy with a full set of savvy arms.

You? Lol. Well how would you feel about splitting them up though? I know that can make them harder to sell... I'd be willing to buy upper and lower rears though instead of just the uppers if that helps

This is one of those times where you quit screwing around and get what you need to move on and sell off the old stuff.

Well I do already have savvy front uppers/lowers thanks to Victor.

Oh you're saying to buy the whole set and sell the ones I don't need

Preparing for a coolant flush.....
