Facebook?

Although their evilness isn't even really my main reason for eschewing the things - first, last, and foremost I consider the PHOOOOOONNE to be severely crippled thing that is a mediocre phone and a piss poor computer. As such, a severe pain in the ass to have to deal with. Why would I want to deal with this crap?, and its crap. A shitty jack of all trades and master of none.

It is well known in certain circles that computers, PHOOOOOONNEs and other such things are - I'll revert to Christian phraseology here for clarity - "of the Devil". Which means they have a built in tendency to devolve towards evil. "Something dark and deadly is at work" indeed, to quote Tolkien.

All this is good and well enough, but what really chaps my hide is this fucking EXPECTATION that I'm supposed to own one of these damn things.

But this guy hits the nail on the head:

He's not wrong...

I just don’t know why anyone would want to use a phone over a computer anyways. I’ve got a 24” iMac and I much prefer the desktop experience any day over mobile. There’s absolutely nothing I would rather do on a phone if a desktop was an option.

Also amazingly stupid are the people who can’t seem to grasp the concept that they don’t need an “app” for everything. They can just use a mobile website in a mobile browser.

Exactly. That's my main, and first, objection to the things. I have three, count them THREE 24 inch screens attached to my 2011 Mac mini (Let's see any PHOOOOOONNE last even half as long), a real keyboard, mouse, and a real operating system. Why would I subject myself to the shit that is the smartphone?

As I've said before, I'm "done" with Apple when I do have to replace this thing - tired of their breaking everything with their never ceasing OS "Updates" that don't really do much. On the Micro$oft side, Win 7 was peak windows, not going there either - Returning to Linux. I just bought my wife a Linux laptop and will follow suit with a Linux mini-desktop "soon".

And yes, there are very few "Apps" that couldn't be replaced with a simple webpage.

I advise EVERYONE to do the same, and never, *EVER* use your legal name in publicly accessible areas of the Internet.

While not a fan or participant in typical "social media" outlets, I can't say I recommend this advice across the board. Not a fan of the platform generally and it has become more like a social media site over time, but if it weren't for my resume on LinkedIn, I wouldn't have found my last three jobs/employers. Not sure I'd like to imagine what the last 15 years of my life would have been like had it not been for those jobs.

I'm with you here, and I'd like to run a flavor of Linux, unfortunately the design and engineering software I run means it's a no-go. Micro$oft sucks.

You can do as little or as much as you want on FB. Marketplace is arguably the best place to find used Jeeps and Jeep parts. It's also my main source for finding wheeling trips here in S. CA. Used to be a lot of runs on WranglerForum, but that died 5+ years ago and now most of the runs are on FB.

I started a 'wheeling only' FB account. Probably 90% of my friends on there are people I know from wheeling. I do spend more time on FB than I'd like to admit though.

I avoided FB until about 2015, then dumped it about 4 years ago after they decided my post was against their rules.
I refuse to participate in a world where sarcasm and truth are both banned.

I agree entirely.

And the folks who do participate (IMHO) are just giving that sniveling, spineless coward Zuckercuck more business.

People should refuse to participate based on principle alone. Sadly, most people don't have the discipline to do that.

Given that Facebook censored (and banned) a sitting President, I think that alone should convince anyone with any semblance of decency to boycott them. Sadly, people have memory-holed that and are back to giving Zuckercuck their business. It really blows my mind how so many these days lack conviction and moral clarity.

In the same way people will continue to support companies like Disney despite all the wickedness they reap simply because, "they have shows I want to watch".

{insert usual rant here} but bottom line, I never saw the point of the thing right up front (same applies to smartphones too). Never mind the teenaged angst and DRAMA with the rest of the Zuckercrap.

Right!? I mean, if I had wanted to stay in touch with my third cousins, I would have done so on my own.
And I don't need an update to know that the kid who pissed himself in 5th grade still has no friends.

The other one that "gets me" and I don't see the point of is "What's Up?". Why use a 3rd party in your comms, esp. one owned by facesuck? Whatsup is smartphone only, email works everywhere, or even texting would make more sense.

You mean Whatsapp? I thought that was designed for scammers to use to scam old people anonymously. That's literally the only use I've heard of for it

My troupe leader insists on using it to communicate with the troupe. Except there are at least two of us who aren't on it, so she emails us. Her husband set up an email list for the troupe - it would be one step that works for everyone, but she won't use it.

People using instant messengers like that for things that need to be findable later is so stupid. Like that, or how it's replacing forums. IMs are a usability nightmare for anything you might want to reference a second time later

That's another reason I don't use texting much. But I never saw the point of IMs, even back in the AIM days. I don't do well with near real time synchronous comms in general, send me an email or call me. Websites insist on using a chat feature instead of email - grossly inefficient.

I loathe those useless chatbots so much. I just copy and paste my question in them repeatedly until it connects to a real person 🤣

FB is a tool and is only as useful as you choose it to be. A hammer as a screw driver? Not going to work well. FB, as a tool to keep in touch with people I actually care to keep in touch with (not the kid in 5th grade who pissed himself who still has no friends (why would YOU keep in touch with HIM?? That I do not understand)) works well and is convenient for most. Market place is ok, but most people can now easily see what the market rate for any given item is and price them as such.

In the great white north, Craigs list NEVER took off. This other thing Kijiji is ok, but is dying a slow death. What I've found is even better in my area is estate auctions.

Genuinely, it sounds like some folks need to loosen their tinfoil hats a little. The red coats are not coming lol.

Trigger the pitch forks and mean words.

A few years ago, I'd have agreed. However nowadays, there is no real way to control your "feed". It's no longer a list of posts from friends and pages you follow, Facebook now fills your feeds from pages you don't follow that it thinks you're interested in, and there is no way to turn it off. That's why I stopped using it, it's just junk I don't care about, most of it either some shitty propaganda or just AI generated drivel

Don't get me wrong, I don't look at the feed. If someone wants my attention, they know how to do it. I mostly look at marketplace, and share pics so my friends can see, if they're interested. Then I'll tag the ones that I think would be interested.

It's all in how you use the tool.

The best excuse people can come up with is, "well I use it to share pictures with friends".

Oh, you mean something you can do via text message or email?

I don't even mess with the chatbots - I'm talking about chat with a live person. I'd rather either talk to them on the phone, or do an email exchange. Chatting via keyboard is very inefficient.
