A likely scenario. I'd clean everything up real good and put it back together. If the resistor looks charred replace it.

Was it steam or smoke?

I'm thinking you burned up some of your heater wiring. Seems like there's two posts a week about folks cooking switches or whatnot because the current through the factory wiring and switches is a tad bit much.
