What did you do to your TJ today?

Well I do. And chances are I’ll driving it for years to come. Has 61k and I definitely didn’t buy it for gas mileage. 🇺🇸
Here she is lookin pretty out at Famous Reading in Pa.

Synthetic line and safety thimble if you’re not already using it. https://blackmagicbrakes.com/ols/categories/wizard-recovery-gear

Take a look at my profile pic. I have a winch on the front with synthetic rope.

I second red02tj's recommendation of adding a safety thimble. It doesn't look like you have one - can't tell from your profile pic (too small), but I found a full frontal shot in your image history. The safety thimble will help you keep both your hands (assuming you like them 🤷‍♂️), as well as protect your fairlead from damage.

One other recommendation - make sure your Superwinch fairlead has a back-side radius, and that the corresponding opening on your winch mounting plate is large enough. They usually are not, and that can lead to your rope getting damaged as it rubs across the sharp edge during an angular pull. One brilliant feature of @mrblaine's fairlead design is an outline on the back of the fairlead that should be visible upon mounting to the winch mounting plate. I recently put a Warn 9.5XP on my Expedition using a Warn mount and Mr. Blaine's fairlead, and I had a fair bit of cutting to do on the Warn mount to keep my rope protected.

Cool, I'll take a look at both of these this weekend.

My ole 8.1 Vortec did better than that!

But who buys a 3/4 tom truck with a gas engine anymore (me seeing a bunch pop up on fleet auction from the local city)

Me three. Looking at F250 gassers since my F150 has the Max Tow package but is *this close* to the top end of the specs when towing our "castle on wheels" travel trailer. Not wanting to maintain a recent diesel, and the 6.2 Ford engine is supposed to be rock solid, and can be improved with a couple aftermarket mods.

A 496" / Allison for the win !

My coworker has the same truck as mine but with the 8.1 and he always talks about the body being all beat up and I keep trying to get him to sell it to me so I can swap it in 🤣 although lots of people say the swap isn't super worth it when you Google it lol

Here's my current recovery kit. Anything else I should add? I know that I likely need a tow rope or kinetic rope. I'm not counting my tool kit because that's separate.

  • Gloves
  • Tree strap
  • 2 soft shackles
  • 2 hard shackles
  • Hitch receiver with hard shackle
  • Snatch block
  • Bag
  • Winch controls
I usually have 2 different kinetic ropes and 1 flat tow strap and maybe add 2 more soft shackles

Pretty much every fleet and municipality in my area that was tired of emissions system repairs on modern diesels.

More than likely. I have been a diesel enthusiast since way before it was the cool thing to do - but even I can't recommend new diesels. I'd just buy an old one!

Made some progress today, diff is torqued in with a .006 backlash, slimline bearings was the ticket. I tried to keep ARB functional but I busted the air tube off. Oh well, this Dana 35 axle will eventually be swapped out with a built up 2002 Dana 44 it will bolt in with suspension just need to fab a bracket.

It was nice to focus on the job without the worry of firestorms. I almost had it all buttoned up but I busted a cover bolt, I stopped right there, tiered, pulled cover off broken bolt came out easy. Start fresh tomorrow, All calm now through the weekend, fires are contained and not a growing threat, winds pick up again next week. 🙏

Well.. she is finally back on all fours.

Was a pain to very end with bad helicoil insert repair on one of 5/16-18 cover bolt thread. Just had to go to Lowe’s again to get bottom tap cleared all kinds of goop in there. I installed cover without the warn rock guard need to get 3/4”? Long bolts for that, thats why thread was stripped only so far, why they didn’t use longer bolts is question. Runs much better, though there is something up with transfer case, have not looked at that very closely yet. Next project, this transfer case has been modified as well with a Tera low 4.1 low gear. I Suspect the guy who did the rear end messed up the case as well?
For now top off fluid in the case. Tomorrow, I am going for a way past due morning 3D shoot at the archery range.
