New Tool Day

Treated myself to a new knife sharpener. My dad taught me how to freehand on a whetstone, and I’d been using a Spyderco sharpmaker but it’s freehand and only supports two angles. I pickup up the Worksharp elite and tested it by putting on a hair popping mirror edge.

Stones go on the swing arm and the knife clamped to the fixture?

Yup. It’s a pretty clever system, came with 3-tri rods with grits of 220,320,400,600,800, ceramic, and strop

That's pretty cool, hadn't seen that before.

Like an improved version of the lansky I've used for years. Although Benchmades get shipped back for resharpening.

Exactly.

I’ve gotten pretty good, I usually only have to ship them back when I really screw up, like disassembling a non-field serviceable automatic or I’ve dropped/broken a tip.

I've been trying to find a system that the sharpening impaired can use to keep their knives sharp without ruining them.

Most of the people I gift nice kitchen knives don't use them for fear they will get dull. But if that's the case why have them? I think I'll get some of those types of setup and see how painful the teaching process will be

Could you link that, please or did you buy it local to you?

I have picked up a few more Milwaukee M18 tools during this kitchen remodel. The framing nailer, a work light that will also run on 120V, and a trim stapler.

The light is cool. Has 3 panel lights, like 4500L combined, that flex and twist. Has a rafter hook, magnets in the base (hangs on the DirtWorx basket nicely to load a trailer) and even has slots to hang on nails or screws.

I like a convex edge. It's easy to put on and maintain, and quite durable.

Sharpen with wet/dry sandpaper on a spongy surface. Some use a mousepad. I started with a 1/3 sheet sanding block that had a rubber pad with some give, and it worked great. Now I have a grizzly horizontal/vertical bench sander, and I cut a section of the backing plate off so the sanding belt will "float" and give the convex edge. Works great and is very quick. I spend the most time swapping belts to change grits.

I finish up with a little drill press mounted buffing wheel and polishing compound. Gives a nice mirrored finish and a very sharp edge.

I have been using whetstones since I was a kid. I have from 400 to 8000 grit currently.
My favorite stone came from my grandpa. i have no idea what the two grits are but it gets my knives sharp enough to shave the back of my hand quickly. I figure if I can shave with them it's good enough for whatever I want.

My comments were aimed mainly at the women in my life and trying to get them to sharpen their own knives.that way they don't leave the knives I give them in a drawer gathering dust because good sharp knives are too "special" for them to use 🙄

Same here, I have a double that you flip over to change the stone. Being that I was once a meatcutter I have no problems sharpening a knife on stones followed by a steel, although I use ceramic now days. (In a pinch you can improve a neglected edge with a round shank screwdriver, BTDT) The way I check an edge is to put my thumbnail at a 45 degree angle to the blade and if the blade slides off it's dull. You can check all along the length this way and address the area that needs attention.

You're doing a kitchen remodel too?? I'll need to do something for lighting too now that the drywallers are coming and I'll have to take down all my bare bulbs. I just finished insulation today, what a nasty job. Are you doing line voltage undercabinet lights? (I see the whips)

$132 for a pair on Amazon. Mine came with a charger but they will charge on the one you have too.

Got a chance to try the new M12 batteries today, they really woke up my M12 impact. Now I need to try one in the Hackzall and the mini Portaband. Mine came with a charger too, the ad never mentioned it. I have 1/2 dozen of those chargers now.

I have used an Edge Pro system for many years for my hunting and kitchen knives, even scissors with their scissors attachment. It's very similar to that Work Sharp Elite, and it'll put a scary-sharp edge on a knife!
