Thanks for this post! I did the same repair using the same boot. Only difference is I used Flex Seal rubber caulk which worked fantastic. The plastic “tower” where the console screw goes in was broken on mine so I plastic welded it up and drilled a new hole for the screw to go in. I have no idea how long it’ll last but it saved me $150+ on a new one. I’ll probably need a new boot later but for now, this is working perfectly.

I knew there was a reason I've had this thing sitting in the parts bin for a year I'll happily start from the second cycle in the trial-and-error process.

Mine actually came with the metal plate around it. I'll plan on removing it and just use the rubber.

and now that I think of it...I should have done this before I installed my hand throttle this weekend.

I ended up swapping in an AX15 and married an AX15 boot to the nsg370 boot in much the same way this thread describes with the mustang boot. I still have the mustang boot in my parts bin if anybody is interested in it for doing this mod.

Anyone ever try to replace the leather outer one with the rubber acordian style from 04 & prior ? I like that look better then the leather one.
If not & doesn't fit anyone know of an outer rubber one that WILL fit an 05 ?

It works perfect! No more furnace and I spent less than $20! The rubber is very soft and supple and I can’t tell the difference between having it on now and when there was nothing at all. No binding and no hard shifting. My foot A/C can actually be felt even with the doors off! Sorry for the long post but I had to share.

Thanks for the very detailed post. Just ordered the part and the silcone. It'll be nice to not have that furnace going during the summer here in Wilmington, NC.

Well, at any rate, that's a great find at $16. I should check my other 05' and seeing if it needs a shifter boot. That heat pouring into the cab gets really annoying down south. I lived in TX 45 years and know what that heat is come mid-summer. Thanks for sharing this!

I glued mine together, but it started coming apart after a year. So I added four small screws to hold the rubber pieces together, and re-glued it. I think it will last much longer now.

Great idea! I just did it myself and saved $200 by using the same boot you did! The only thing I did different is attach the new boot to the bottom.

So far my OEM replacement boot that I got from Jeep Collins about 4 yrs ago is fine.

The lower boot covers the hole in the tub that allows the manual shifter to go into the transmission. Above that are all parts related to the console including the decorative and functional upper shift boot. If the heat is already in the cab due to a torn lower shift boot there’s nothing to really stop it.

May also be worth noting that the inner boot has value in keeping noxious gases out of the cabin area.

Thanks for the tip on the mustang gasket, works very well!
A couple of thing I did differently;
- flip the gasket so it didn't get in the way of the shifter
- used CA glue (or rubber cement) to just adhere the new gasket to the old cut off one

- used some excess gasket to glue a piece into the inner circle where the shifter goes through, this gave it a perfect fit

I like that boot mounted upside down — great idea!

But I wouldn't trust just glue alone to hold, with the hot and cold and flexing. Mine didn't. If it eventually starts to pull loose, some extra fasteners might be needed — staples, small screws, etc.

Worked great on the 2003. I just used the original ring from the old shifter to secure it to the floor. I didn't use any glue on mine at all

Thanks to all for this information. Mice got into my garage and ate the wires on my WRX (engine compartment) disrupting the traction control and ABS.

They also got into the LJ but only damage was they are through both shifter boots. The heat wasn't an issue but the noise was annoying. I ordered a new upper boot https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0CTJF1VWL?tag=wranglerorg-20 that seems to have the same dimensions. And I ordered the Scott Drake boot also from Amazon for only $31.26 and I have Prime so no shipping charge.

I couldn't get the lower boot plate off (the captured nuts are all rusted) but I'll get the boot attached with staples, glue, pop-rivets or something. I screwed up the shifter knob as it took a pipe wrench to get it off. I may turn a new one out of Black Walnut. Meantime I'll use the buggered up one.

what kind of noise did you have ? I know mine is cracked and have a replacement already just haven't installed it yet.
