I’ve got a 99 tj that I’ve owned for a few months I’ve drove it everyday until my horn quit working when I took it apart to try and fix it I found a wire unplugged so I plugged it in it did not fix the horn but when I fired it up it ran for a couple seconds and dies so I unplugged the wire and still won’t run more than a couple seconds I know what the plug in is for but it was running without it and now it won’t need a little help here

If this amber key symbol comes on indicating a SKIM (for security) problem you either have a bad SKIM module or your gray SKIM key chip has gone bad.

Do you have a second gray colored SKIM key to try? Keep in mind black ignition keys have no SKIM chip in them so they won't work when the SKIM system if working.

That's interesting I've never heard of this. I can see that going very badly in the middle of a trail. I only received a black key when I purchased my jeep, where would I find a SKIM key and can I program it myself?
I don't mean to hijack this thread.

Seems like the easy answer would be to unplug it.

Once you plug the module in and it reads a PCM without SKIM programmed to said module, it’ll lock the PCM out. OP is going to have to get his PCM flashed and leave the module unplugged. The module only works with the original PCM it was programmed to.

Maybe this is the original PCM and the chipped keys were going bad so someone disabled it.

Since you can start your TJ with a black key that means your TJ doesn't have the optional SKIM security system.

here's my guess -

A. previous owner had issues with the SKIM and had it disabled, but left the module. OP plugged in the SKIM and reactivated it.

B. previous owner wanted to add SKIM, installed the module but didn't plug it in, then couldn't find anyone to do the enable procedure and never got it enabled.

also, welcome, new member. You might drop by and introduce yourself and post a photo of the Jeep in the new member forum and fill out your profile to make it official. :)
