while on bolt topic... what size is the 4 bolts that hold the dust cover on over where the shifter sticks out. (not the one in the cab).

in thinking about this..( I know that is dangerous thing) am considering cutting the above boot at some spot where I can use a metal or plastic big zip tie to clamp it onto the tower... Maybe not even cut it. The boot has a metal part in the base... the weight of that may help keep the boot.. even though clamped... from wanting to work its way off via vibrations
What jeep did that boot come off of? curious its orientation when properly installed considering that the hole for the shifter is offset of center.
The bottom boot is for 1997-2002 only and it's the lower or inner
03 and 04 had a plate that looked like the one attached below and then the shifter assembly like you pictured.
I am fairly certain 05 and 06 were the same way although the boot changed shapes but same idea.

what is that plate bolted too? cab or trans? Is this the one notorious for causing issues if you have a body lift?
In other words..on an 03 up you have the top boot and then the shifter assembly and that's it.
ohhh there is THREE boots.
hmmm.. wonder #2 above can be inverted to help with the pop out of gear issue folk get with body lifts. If was goind do that guess one would need to separate the two parts of the shift lever and slip the tip of this inverted boot over the lever portion that #1 fits over, then soft hammer the upper part of shift lever back on. Assuming this is the one that causes shifter issues with body lifts. might need to drill new holes to screw it down. .
- on the trans shift tower (one version round, other square)
- one on tub. apparently that is for keeping heat out of cab. THINK this one is the one notorious for pushing shifter out of gear if you have a big body lift (which I do 3") or it is the next one (or both)
- upper in cab held in with a plastic surround that clips into center console.
Can anyone verify if it is boot #2 that is the or one of the culprits that make TJ's pop out of gear with body lifts?
UPdate... scratch that #2 is part of the popping out of gear thing... apparently that is all #3

Got a brand new #2 .Both 2 and 3 can cause popping out of gear. 2 is the one that’s discontinued for 03-04 and ends up having to be a jack job unless you can find a good used one. Though most of them by now have been subject to enough hot and cold that they are falling apart regardless.
I think all the trans shift tower boots themselves are round.
Consider this photo of a dirty old nsg370 and a brand new AX15 side by side...both have small round boots on the towers. the nv3550 is similar.

see post 23. Mine is like tower....

we said same thing in a different way... the boot on square tower pictured has a rounded rubber portion; yes, but that was not i refereed to. Was referring to the housing construction ... AKA- if you remove the boot... nothing in the construction of the black tower's "housing's" shape is round. It is as you called it a "Bloated Square" shaped housing. Not sure I'm following what you're trying to show me. That post has a photo of a (square) shift tower with a round boot #1 on its top, and then a photo of a round boot #2 from a 97-02 TJ.
...
...
If yours is an 04 it should have had the discontinued boot from post 25. If you don't mind a little light fabrication, you can marry your 97-02 round boot onto the surround like I did with my 06 (I did not follow the original orientation of the boot)....
is photo in 25 the thing upside down.. or was the earlier ones a funnel like that?
Due to my 3" body lift... not sure I can use #2 in your (and others) Fabri-crafted way cause it is said in general #2 tends to be part of the "pop out of gear" issue with more than 1.25" body lifted TJ's. Thus what I fabri-craft will need to be different to avoid that; hense the idea of mounting it inverted
Got a brand new #2 .
what did they go to after they discontinued that one?
ordered a new #1
The photo in post 25 is exactly how you would see it looking down at it, sitting in the vehicle. It's kinda weird looking, yes. But as far as being tolerant to body lifts it's a pretty decent design...but there's a limit to everything.
