Time to change your cabin air filter

It uses the existing stock screw holes.

I'm not convinced the earlier models had the holes from the factory. Not sure what year is shown in this photo found on the interwebs but @patdugan indicated his is a '99 model. The hole certainly looks similar. I'm attempting to come up with an alternate air plenum to suit earlier models for my design. (y)

I drilled holes and then used washer head screws. They didn't add screw holes in the TJ until they switched over to using that covered trim piece. In the earlier models there are no holes and no covering, mine is a 99.

It looks as though, save for modifications to give clearance to the screw holes, the actual hole punched through the sub-cowl is the same size. That said, some years seem to have a bit of plastic extending through the hole from inside. Making an alternate air plenum part might be a bit easier than originally thought.

What printer did you use to make that?

Bambu Lab P1S, overall I'm very pleased with it. Handles ABS and ASA prints with relative ease. Most of the parts take between 0.5 to 3 hours (not including cooling time), except for the main air plenum...that one comes in at ~14 hours with higher print quality settings. The plenum is also a bit wasteful as it uses a lot of material for support. I tried flipping the part over on the print bed to reduce support but quality of the finished part suffered remarkably.

The eBay item from the original post now has an option to include a splash guard. I bought the filter adapter months ago and saw the new splash guard and PMd the seller, he agreed to sell me just the splash guard as a separate item and had it out the next day.

What is the point of this on a TJ? Seriously. I'm curious. My Scion has one and it helps the blower motor to keep running. I found out the hard way when mice built a nest in it. Blower motor quit running.
 
The demand for this must very by location. I changed my heater core last year at over 200,000 miles and every thing was clean aside from a 1/4" of light dirt on the bottom. No filter needed at all.

There is absolutely no demand for it. Anal retentive people need it. Like gluten free food that has gluten, and NOBODY is allergic to it. If the label says so it must be true. 🤫

Smoke for one here in the PNW. I didn't do it this year but most our area is covered in smoke. Top goes back on. I have a small HEPA filter the size of a large cup...use that in my cab to filter my air.

Then there's dust...I should grab a screenshot from my Rubicon footage.

I agree... unless you want that clean filtered air to hit you in the face while you have the top and doors off...

Not everyone uses their Jeep as a fair weather weekend toy or wants a face full of dust if they kick on the blower. Mine's a daily driver utility vehicle that wears a hardtop every day of the year.

I drive mine as often as I can, not always in fair weather... Daily? not really, I have another Jeep that wants to share my attention. The ONLY time the TJ is fully buttoned up, is when the outside temps are below around 40° F. I have NEVER had dust in the HVAC system, other than a very fine layer... I get more on the dash in a week than what was in there after nearly 20 years of ownership.

My JT is almost the same... The AC is only on when I drive it to work in the mornings, and top and windows open on the way home. I checked the cabin filter last summer (3 years old at the time) and it was still clean.

If I wanted a vehicle to never have the top and doors come off, there are a lot of cheaper/more comfortable SUVs out on the market to go to the mall...

Speak for yourself. You may not benefit from one but there are plenty of us who run hard tops and wheel in dusty areas who would.

I made this simple "cabin air filter" with a leftover furnace register filter and some binder clips to test the concept. No more blasts of dust from the vents when turning on the A/C. Cost = pennies.

@chili_pepper has a better design, but I have no experience with 3D printers and don't know anyone who does, so I think I might try this "retail" version with splashguard on ebay:

$56 shipped. Housing and cover are 3D printed ABS equivalent. Seems like a good design since it will accommodate standard Mopar cabin filter. As long as walls are thick enough. 3D printed stuff is not as strong as actual molded parts. These parts wont see any stress except where the screws are used so don't over tighten when installing.
