MORryde HD Tailgate Hinges

I got the Moryde hinges installed - no problem - but the stock carrier wouldn’t fit my 33 with a steel rim (it hit the bumper). I bought and installed the Rugged Ridge HD tire carrier. Fits great, and seems very sturdy. My only complaint is that the top of the tailgate is slightly off due to the extra weight of the spare - see pic. Everything opens/closes fine, but I can tell extra weight on the carrier causes stress on the upper part of the tailgate.

Did you install the bracket that connects it to the rear roll cage's support base? That bracket is meant to transfer the spare tire's weight to the roll cage mounting base.

I did not get the full system - I ended up only getting the HD hinges.

The idea of the whole system is that it reinforces the tailgate and the hinge area of the tub so that the weight of the tire won't pull out and twist the tailgate. Just using the hinges only fixes part of the problem.

Fix the tire snubbers to stop the tire from bouncing or you will have wasted a bunch of time and money accomplishing nothing.

I'll be the odd man out, i sold my morryde kit.

I had both the hinges and the reinforcement plate, i found that the fitment was far too variable. I think there needs to be a better method of getting it back to where the original tailgate placement is. The Youtube video on the install basically just shows throwing a wedge in there, slamming it, and tightening it down. That shit was floppy and my tailgate would drop an inch or two when opened. Guy i bought the hinges from sold them for an OR-FAB, I'm planning on doing the same.

Your mileage may vary.

I just find it hard to believe that every JK/JL on the road has a 37” spare on what appears to be a stock, or close to stock carrier.

The hinges seem to work fine, but I feel like there’s a better way to get more support on the tail gate 🤷🏻‍♂️.

Doesn't mean they are carrying that tire in a way that won't break apart the rear gate. The same rules apply to JKs. The spare can't bounce. If the spare bounces, stuff will eventually start to crack.

most likely the brackets that ties into the roll cage is a must as Jerry was saying. Did your kit come with spacers for the snubbers? The ones that came with my MORryde were about 1” thick.

I just installed this and ran into what you are describing. — What I did was shim the passenger side to just slightly higher than where the body lines match, and then I wedged a rubber mallet against the tailgate reinforcement plate and a 2x4 resting on my bumper(to fill the gap) and was able to use the mallet handle as a fulcrum to lift the driver side of the tailgate higher than the body line on the tub. You have to have all bolts on the hinges loose to get it to line up correctly. I also loosened the tailgate striker stud so that it could move forward and upward, as it had a slight rattle upon initial install. After all of that and some grease, it is a 2 finger tailgate and seems pretty solid. This below is where it lies resting up against the striker (with the weight of a 35 and a 17" steelie) but not yet latched.

I am trying to figure out what to do about the snubbers - I had to use the offset brackets but may end up re-drilling the mounting point on my HD tire carrier bracket (might be rugged ridge?) so that I can get the tire closer to the tailgate. The offset brackets space it out another 1.5" and I would have to have a massive bottom snubber to take up that space. Thoughts on this would be appreciated from anyone.

Even with the full kit, as pointed out earlier, you absolutely have to use snubbers between the tire and the body to keep the weight and position of the spare tire from applying a torque to the tailgate every time you hit a bump. When I did mine, I searched high and wide for a spare carrier. I was just about to give up and modify a stock carrier when I discovered this one:

I had to drill new mounting holes in it to clear the bumper with the tire, but it was the only one that keeps the tire reasonably close to the tailgate so that snubbers can be used. I shared pics of my installation in this post a couple years back:

Your bumper must stick out pretty far.
I added a single 1" wheel spacer to the stock carrier, but that was just for the tire to clear the new (thicker) HD hinges.
Then I adjusted the snubbers accordingly.

A existence of a body lift also plays a role in whether or not a bumper might interfere with a spare tire.

Bumper size, body lift, wheel backspacing, tire diameter and width, mount projection all create a cumulative set of variables that make each installation unique to the rig.
