Hello all,
Picked up a nice used TJ a couple of days ago. It has 42re with receipts showing it was rebuilt 2 years or 5k miles ago. 143K on Jeep. It has a hard shift from 1-2 on the first shift or when cold is what I noticed so far if you are not going very fast. Seeing talk of PCM issues so I was following troubleshooting steps I saw on forum. That issue caused me to pull codes with my Torque app. When I did I had 4 codes. P0303, P0455, P0456, P0457 the first is cylinder 3 misfire the last 3 codes all dealing with evap. What I noticed was I had no CEL light on. So I turned the ignition off and on and do not see it testing CEL on key-on state. I did the procedure to test the dash a (hold trip meter turn ignition to on) and tests through all lights and gauges but CEL never turns on.

I know I have multiple issues to work through and figured I should start at gauge cluster. Hopefully, the other information is useful also.

Thanks,
Blake

Update - So still no CEL, but I learned some things tonight. Codes would not clear when the vehicle was running. I tried the torque app and a cheap autel plugin scanner. Both would read but not erase with Jeep running. I turned the ignition to off and the autel gave failed error trying to erase. I turned ignition to on not running and codes cleared, including pending ones. I installed a new Gates gas cap this evening before clearing codes. Drove for 10 miles and no codes came back. I have not noticed a miss or any performance issues so no telling how long that code has been set. I do not see the insulator on Injector 3 so I am guessing the heat soak issue may be the culprit because in the 75 or so miles I have driven it I haven't ever noticed a miss.

the test on the EVEP system only runs when the tank is between 3/4 and 1/4 on a cold start ,so in 10 miles it wont run that test.

Does your engine indicator light ever light up? If not, the bulb might be burnt out or missing.

Good news on the codes not coming back. I have the p0303 code off and on even with the TSB wrap and the injector clocked to about 2 o’clock.

I didn’t have the misfire code after it was properly double wrapped, but the Velcro has failed to the outter wrap. I’ll wrap it again and then hope for the best.

Thanks for the responses, everyone. I looked at some photos of 06s clusters online, and all I see are 6 bulbs to illuminate the gauges. If you open the cluster up are there bulbs for the individual lights that are replaceable and not part of the pcb?

@tr21triton

I have between 1/2 and 3/4 tank when I installed the new cap. The Jeep had sat all afternoon. I noticed at one point the coolant temp was 168 when I tried to reset codes. Are you thinking I need to drive again after its cooled off? Does the evap test run within a certain amount of time of it being started?

Correct, there are lights for the individual indicators…which makes sense since otherwise they’d all be on or all be off with the cluster.

I have blue LED cluster lights (for backlighting), but I didn’t change the other lights since they aren’t on full time and I didn’t want them to be super bright.

Thanks, good info in there. I am in Oklahoma and it's full on summer now. So it may be a while before I can work through the full troubleshooting if it wasn't the crappy locking cap.

just drive it, if it comes back on I suggest replacing the EVAP cannister and purge valve at the same time ..not overly expensive. if that doesn't do it you'll need to check for leaks.

So digging through the 06 service manual, I found a few things. The light isn't replaceable and I have a couple of codes coming up when I do a cluster test by holding the trip button and turning the ignition on. I have b0 error and panel open. The panel open surprised me because the dimmer is working.
Errors from manual. From what I read DRBIII are not very common anymore.

Info stating MIL is led mounted to board.

Thanks for the info.

I chose not to change the other cluster lights, but maybe I didn’t have a choice in the matter.

I’ll take another look at my cluster when I paint needles again.

So do you see the engine indicator light when the ignition is on but the engine is off?
