IPhone 14 or Inreach?

I really like my Apple Watch works so well with my iPhone.

I like changing songs and stuff from the watch and I like notifications, but I also like weeks of battery life. I just don't see what else I can utilize.

The wife is zoned in on the new watch though. Those advertising notes were like lightening to her so I think it makes sense for her. She mainly wants me to have 1 so I have to compete with workout challenges.

I compete with my daughter so I understand. I charge my watch and my phone every night.

the problem is that it doesn't suck you in because of how good it is, it forces you in by making their shit incompatible with everything else.

They are probably doing that, but the ease of how I can use my iPad as a screen and it will actually be a touchscreen monitor has some convenience. And how easily I can transfer files is nice. The way they ostracize other manufacturers and stay focused on their own system does make it so that I have fewer issues with their stuff than I do all of the craziness in something like windows and google and I'm too out of the loop on Linux.

I am quite a bit more tech savvy than most and have been for as long as I’ve been old enough to use a computer. I started out with the android and Apple comparisons and didn’t just choose one because I liked a brand better or anything else. I genuinely like Apple products better and so far that hasn’t been changed. It’s not because I’m biased or close-minded, I’ve seen both sides and can personally find 0 upsides to android that would benefit me. Androids to me are clunky, cluttered, and their support with future software updates is extremely hit or miss. I could buy an expensive phone and it not get updates in a year or two. With Apple most phones are getting 5-7 years of software support, although I only keep them 2-3 years mainly because I want to get the latest features after a few years.

The way I’ve seen android suck many people in is with gimmicky features. For example, 9 or 10 years ago my friend got some Samsung that was popular then (summer 2013) that allowed you to wave your hand in front of the screen and the phone would respond by swiping home screens. It worked maybe half the time or less. How is that helpful or better than just touching your thumb to the screen? Now they’ve got folding screens and whatever else. Just examples but crap like that is why a lot of people try out android for a bit. And I’m sure many just plain like it better and that’s fine.

i will give them credit, they allow more customization but that’s about where the pros end, for me anyways. I don’t need crazy customization, I mostly need something organized and reliable that I can access all my content on. Apple does that nearly flawlessly other than a few bugs in the software that pop up now and then. If I want to get super technological and lost in the weeds on computer stuff, I’ll just use a computer, I don’t need that capability on my phone.

As for the “it doesn’t suck you in because of how good it is, it forces you in by making their shit incompatible” - how? What is incompatible? They have their own cloud system, sure. They have a superior proprietary messaging system. Don't get me wrong, I would love if they would open up iMessage to the Androiders but I know they won't and I understand why. Otherwise I don’t see what of theirs isn’t compatible with anything else. Android things are compatible across the different brands because they run the same OS from Google. Apple doesn’t. I don’t see how that’s a fault of Apple. That’s mostly a personal preference, i.e. what OS you want to be a part of. You can own both and keep the content across them mostly synced with little issues. Very few people with Apple products (or the whole ecosystem) truly hate them and not everyone in the Apple world is a clueless sheep like the Android users want everyone to believe. There are plenty of sheep too, but both sides have sheep.

As for the dumpster fire situation with your wife’s phone not working when plugged into the computer, that is not typical. I’ve had probably 20 iProducts by now and never once had an issue like that. I did have an iPod classic refuse to load content from iTunes but that’s because I dropped it and screwed the hard drive. I do wonder if that phone could be brought back to life with a DFU or recovery mode reset via iTunes. Although if you're trying to recover content off of it then that wouldn't be good because those two reset methods will wipe it. You can't get onto the phone any other way?

I have an iPod video classic too. A couple years ago I needed to replace the battery, and while I had it apart I upgraded from the 30GB hdd to a 128GB SD

And I love how streamlined working across the apple platform is. I take a pic with my phone using my watch as a remote control… double check that photo instantly on the iPad, then edit on the Mac, to displaying final product on my TV in 4K… all without complicated setup or inserting media.

Nice. I had an 80GB 5th generation which is what I dropped and it would only hold 0.5GB after that. I could have fixed it but was a broke middle or high school kid by then, I don't remember. I eventually got a 7th gen 250GB which I used for a bit and then sold to buy whatever iPhone was out around then. Those classics would have been a lot better with an SSD.

They are better with SD. There’s also an output capacitor mod that can be done to make the sound quality one of the best in the industry.

My Pixel 3 got 3 years of OS updates and still gets security updates. My experience with apple was that the updates kept coming for longer, but after 3 years they became too resource intensive for an older phone, and the lagginess got annoying. I buy phones NIB 2 years after the release date so they only cost about $250, but being a flagship phone still keep up with performance and photo quality. I could buy a 2 year old flagship Google phone every year for the same money and have an on-average newer and more enjoyable phone than if I bought a new iPhone every 5 years.

Something we definitely agree on is I find a lot of Android phones to also be cluttery and gimmicky, which is why I only buy AndroidOne phones - vanilla Android - No manufacturer or carrier BS. I was almost ready to (reluctantly) switch after a run of bloated Samsungs when the vanilla Android thing started to come to more models.

I from time to time end up using homebrew type applications that aren't written for or available on apple devices, and I like the customizability like being able to choose an entirely different interface. That customizability gives me the feeling like I'm running something that's mine, rather than feeling like I paid out the nose for the privilege of using it until it's too annoying to use.

Apple could release apps on other platforms and solve the entire problem. The fact that an Android user can't just quietly install iCloud or Facetime but instead has to ask the Apple user to install Skype or Duo or Google Photos or OneDrive or tolerate using a half-ass option through a web browser to be able to use basic smartphone features with their Apple friends is nothing but Apple trying to use status shaming and peer pressure to "suck" more people into their ecosystem. Same thing with an Apple watch - you can use anybody's watch on an iPhone because everybody makes iOS apps for their device, but no dice if you want to use an Apple watch on an Android device. I have heart things in my family history so the fact that the Apple watch basically does a built-in EKG would be kinda nice, but not if I have to buy a new phone to work with it. That their business model is built around making it annoying to use third party devices and selling a culture (something Jeep and Harley Davidson are equally guilty of) I believe is generally understood.

I'm not sure what's superior about their proprietary messaging system. The only complaint I have about my messaging system is the features that don't go back and forth with Apple (such as reacting to a text). But the fact that it works one way and not the other, combined with Apple's usual strategy described above, I'd put my money on it being Apple's fault.

There's also no reason that everybody can't be using USB-C and have interchangeable peripherals. It's been USB on the other end for a long time now.

One of these days I'll have her go through her free OneDrive account and clear up some space so she can upload them all there and then I can get to them. But I'm not aware of any other way to directly transfer the files to a computer (where I want them) than with the USB cable.

This really annoyed me. All my Apple stuff is already USB-C and they can't add that for the stinking phone? I almost decided to wait another year, but then I was just like F it and succumbed.

I think this is only my 4th smartphone, maybe 5th, so it's hard for me to make too many judgements about platforms when I really don't have a lot of experience with a bunch of phones.

I do miss the removeable battery feature that's been lost to most phones for years. I do like the cameras. It's even easier than carrying around a gopro.

I started with Samsung, mainly because the wife worked for them and at the time there were a lot of new features and buzz and Apple was very slow with stuff, which now I appreciate, but for awhile it seemed like they were lacking useful features and now I'm fairly familiar with all the features I want and the biggest issue I have is that I want them to actually work and not be buggy with ads. My current phone does not play well with apps and I don't even have email and have pop-up ads to deal with because most stuff doesn't work well with my Sonim, but it's a beast, it's loud, has actual buttons, swappable battery, swappable storage, USB-C fast charging and lasts for days on a single charge. However it's very slow and unresponsive and a bad camera and little app/software support.

I rarely plug in my phone.

When I've had a wireless charging capable phone I tended towards wireless charging too and rarely used the plug. I think I'm going to get something in the car and either at work or at home. Some of those have a bit of a noise at night.

My truck has built in wireless charging but that's about the only time I'll plug my phone in since I don't have wireless carplay.

Once you get your apple watch you'll want a charge station like I posted. Charge it all without messing with wires.

As I understand it, the satellite communication feature on the new iPhone is automatic. If you have an incident, it automatically reports your location data to some level of S&R. The InReach is a true two way satellite communicator, albeit via text. While it has the SOS feature, which fortunately I have never had to use, it also has a few levels of satellite communication. Canned messages and open text messages, regardless of whether you have cell service.

I do a ton of backpacking and there is a place for both of these devices.

If I have an event, I have two way communication with S&R before they launch the team to my location. Or, my wife can tell me how to get the bleeding to stop before I have to hit SOS.

I compete with my daughter so I understand. I charge my watch and my phone every night.

I don’t charge my phone until it is below 10% and then I charge it fully. As a result I don’t use the wireless charging. My battery health has remained in the high 90% after years of use and I think it’s because of how I charge it. Watch needs to be charged every day, so I throw it on the fast charger when I get in the shower and it is at 100% by the time I leave for work.

Apple got me. I finally bought an iMac to replace my windows machine, so I am 100% apple in my personal life. Work is still Windows machines but they provide an iPhone 11.

I just love how everything is connected. I don’t feel I need anything else. All my devices are fully connected to my Synology NAS a home, so I have about 20 TB of cloud storage. I use the iCloud for my daughter to back up to on the fly.

Pre-ordering 14 Pro’s for my daughter and I.

I am totally hooked on the Watch. I haven’t worn anything else since my first Series 3. now have the 7. When I backpack I wear a Garmin Fenix 5X Plus because it integrates with the InReach, and the Apple Watch goes on my ankle.

Only charging issues I’ve had are lint messing up the charge port. Which is why I prefer wireless.

Have an 11 pro max now. Probably won’t upgrade any time soon. Battery is at 85% and has been charged nightly since I got it at release.

Tech putty is what you need for that… it’s a sticky clay like stuff to clean out all the crevices

I use Tech putty to keep ports clean.

My X has been treated the same way, until I started using car play a lot. My Batt is at 64%… Wife and I have 14 pro max’s on order… I can’t wait to start using that camera! Other than Zoom, the 14’s camera specs best my 60D!
