What is normal with the Jeeperman rear bumper / tire carrier latch?

Have a Jeeperman rear bumper / tire carrier and tire carrier closes with a 'normal' push, but then has a very slight rattle. Pressing the release switch allows for it to easily swing open. If I slam it shut, the latch holds the swing arm much tighter and there is zero rattle — however, I have to use a hammer or the back of a wrench to give the release switch a firm smack to release. Despite how hard I've tried, I cannot get it to release by hand if slammed shut. Is this normal for the latch? Or, is there some kind of adjustment that I could make?
