What else to do when replacing clutch?

I’m getting ready to replace the clutch on my 03 TJ and wondering what else there is to change when I do so. Any “while you’re in there” items I can take care of when I do it?

Depending on mileage it might be wise to replace the rear main seal. Additional, check out the flywheel just to make sure it's in good shape.

Throw out bearing, have the flywheel surfaced, replace the rear main, replace the pilot bearing/bushing, and if its got the external slave cylinder, inspect the bearing fork for wear. If its got the internal slave cylinder instead (not sure what the years are) then replace that.

I though our flywheels were convex and not recommended to re-surface?

Could be, never needed to do a clutch in a Heep yet so I've not looked at it in depth. With that said, a new flywheel is cheap. Any bluing or wear and I'd just replace it if its not able to be resurfaced.

Yes flywheel is convex. Don't have it resurfaced.

Use a Luk kit. Includes the TOB and a pilot bearing or bushing.

If you want a new flywheel a Luk one isn't too expensive but verify the slots for your CPS are identical to your existing flywheel.

Rear main seal is accessed from the oil pan. About the only commonality with the clutch job is dropping the exhaust.

Best while you're in there is cleaning up and relooming the wiring harness running along the transmission/transfer case to the fuel tank.

Good time to consider a B&M short throw shifter. Or an AX-15 conversation.

SYE on the transfer case if you're going in that direction.

Definitely a Savvy cable shifter for the t case.

Possibly a rear seal for the transmission.

I found the Crown throwout bearing to be
the best of the current options. National are now made in China. Whoever makes the Crown one are in Taiwan and they machine finished the back likethe factory one.

Clean any rust off the frame at the skid and repaint it. Or was this the reason I did the clutch?

Wire brush

Phosphoric acid etch

When the NV3550 failed I swapped in a new Novak AX15. I kept the flywheel but cleaned the surface with a red Scotch-Brite pad. I did the B&M Sport shifter, Savvy transfer case shifter cable, Mopar clutch fork, pivot ball, Luk clutch kit with pilot bearing, pressure plate. Tossed the plastic ToB that came in the LUK kit and replaced it with a National based on recommendations here. Also replaced the clutch master cylinder and slave with a Mopar (PN 52107652AC). At the 5000 mile mark on the new parts the National ToB failed catastrophically causing irrevocable damage to the front bearing retainer/snout on the brand new AX15. While fixing that, I replaced the failed National ToB with a Mopar (PN 53008342). I was able to find one of the few remaining USA made ToBs... cost four times as much as the Crown or National but it's OE.

Probably a good time to add some new colorful expressions to your vocabulary so you can pull them out at appropriate times as things go dramatically wrong during the install.

Did a clutch job on my 65 gto with my father and brother once, three of us under the car trying to seat the transmission the last 1/2 inch while losing wrenches and bleeding profusely from my knuckles. This is where i learned the expression, "like three monkeys effing a football" and i have to say, it could not have been a more accurate description.
