Two sets of tires or one?

Hello everyone. I'd love some opinions on which way I should go. 2004 TJ 5 Speed. Currently on 33's (KO2's) and making necessary upgrades for 35's in the near future.

I live in the mountains of Colorado and this is my daily driver. I do wheel in the San Juans and Moab whenever I can, but I keep it on 'greens' or 'blues' since it's my daily.

The limited slip differential I've installed has really helped on the icy/snowy roads during the winter. BFG KO2's have been ok....not very pleased with the wear, but it's the only tire I've had on my rig so I don't know any difference.

QUESTION: Is it worth using my Alcoa 15" rims for a M/T type tire during the summer, and a different set of Blizzaks or something during the winter? (Purchase a set of cheaper rims for winter) I would still need to drive on the highway year round (not much, but it will happen). Control/safety during the winter and capability during the summer is what I'm looking for. Am I overthinking this, or would swapping between 2 sets be a good idea?

I appreciate the feedback.

Living in the mountains of Colorado and it being your daily driver, I'd have two sets of tires and wheels with one being a dedicated set of snow tires (i.e. Blizzaks).

Thank you Chris, that's what I was leaning towards. Perhaps I should have mentioned this in the original post, but:

1. What brand/type is recommended for a summer/off-road tire that's still decent on the highway? Perhaps all M/T tires are good...I just don't want to chew them up with the limited amount of highway driving I do.

2. What size winter rim/tire package would be best for my TJ? From what I could tell the options for Blizzaks would require a 17" rim. I would be aiming for a 35" tire but any specs on preferred tire/rims would be awesome.

An A/T tire is a fine all season tire if you want the aggressive look without the poor on-road manner of a M/T tire. For the winter I have personally run Blizzaks and can't recommend them enough. They truly are an awesome tire for snow.

As for size, I'd go with 17x8 wheels for the winter tires. In regards to tire size, that's up to you, but the taller and narrower tire is going to be preferable in the snow (unless it's back country deep snow, at which point you've got other considerations).

If you can afford it and have the space for storage, its not a bad idea. A good AT tire for winter and an MT for trails.

As was said, if you have space, two sets of wheels/tires solve a number of problems. With a big one being you can destroy the wheels on the rocks and not worry about it. The first picture is the daily driver wheels/tires, with A/Ts. The second picture is the wheeling wheels/tires, with M/Ts. For me, it's the ideal solution, but here are a few things to be aware of:
  • You'll spend more money;
  • You need extra space to store them;
  • Swapping them can get old, if you wheel frequently;
  • If you get wheels with different backspacing, you then have to swap the tire snubbers to fit; and
  • Different wheels and tires will impact the ride quality, especially if you swap between A/T and M/T tires.

I like two sets of wheels. The swap is not too often or too cumbersome for me. My reasons are a little different, but it has worked well and once you’re in with two sets then the cost is mitigated.
