So I have been daily driving my jeep for two and a half years and at the end of May I got the transmission code P1776 and got stuck in limp mode. When I turn off the jeep and turn it back on it goes away temporary but code could come back a few seconds later or may go away for a few days. It seems to often occur when shifting gears getting on the highway or cruising on the highway, and especially when I had a landscape trailer behind my jeep to pickup tires, it happened frequently. I have dropped the valve body and replaced the solenoid pack the filter and the fluid. It was good for about a month and then the code popped up again, then it was good for a few weeks and then it’s slowly been popping up more often. Now it is at the point where it pops up once almost every time I drive it. It normally happens after driving it for a little while. I don’t have carpet so I know the trans tunnel has always gotten hot, but I’m not sure if it’s hotter than usual. I’m in college so I don’t wanna just throw away money at it even though I know it’s a Jeep. Just looking for some more straightforward answers. There are lots of threads on this but a lot of them seem to be open ended. Thank you guys

OK buddy here’s the deal man -

I just went through some transmission drama and I did learn a lot - one thing I learned is that nobody has all the answers, And on a forum you have a lot of guys that just know a little bit about transmissions and they will chip in random things...no sin in that. Just confusing.

So here you go-

Even the best transmission shops on the planet aren’t 100% sure what’s going to be at the bottom of any code-

The 42RLE is a good transmission, it is “smart” and pretty advanced for its time frame.... It does have some weaknesses. ...the overdrive final drive ratio and it runs hot.

Based on your profile you have a TCM module that is separate from the PCM. Those particular models tend to be less problematic as far as PCM failure.

The shift solenoid that triggers that code is on the passenger side front of the transmission pretty close to the exhaust pipe and you need to carefully check the harness all the way from there up to the engine bay for degradation- I have a friend right now that completely removed his entire harness and repaired every nick, etc because of similar things going on.

-you need to find a good mechanic with a really good laptop computer and get that jeep on the computer and see what’s happening when you’re driving.

Then drop the pan and look
For metal- And change the fluid filter.

If you find a lot of metal- You’re going to need to plan on rebuilding the transmission and possibly replacing the torque converter.

People that are quick to be parts changers are going to tell you to replace the shift solenoid- If you determine it is failing- go mopar.

But for now go slow check the wiring see what’s going on inside and just try to get a baseline-

Pm if needed. I’ve got the name of a good shop that will talk to you even if you’re out of state and they are very experienced with the transmission.
