97, NP231, automatic, cable shifter.

I've been having some problems shifting the thing the last few times out. Primarily that it doesn't really want to stay in 4LO, which is why I bought the cable shifter in the first place. But usually eventually I can get it to go. I was just underneath it, and it seems to be operating fine. With the jeep off, my kid was able to shift it through all the motions, with it firmly feeling like it was in gear in all 3 spots.

But then with the jeep running in the garage, even in park we had a hard time going from 4HI to N. Then with the transmission in neutral, there is always a little bit of grinding getting it into 4LO, and also taking it out of 4LO and even into 4HI sometimes. I don't remember that being the case, but I had kept this jeep out of state for the past year and it's possible I just don't remember anything. Related, the Part Time light doesn't always want to come on in 4LO, and that is a very good predictor of when it's going to pop out of gear.

And then as I was coming off a fire trail last week, I was unable to shift from 4HI to 2HI even when stopped. I had to put it into Park and then it shifted easily out of 4HI.

So maybe I'm insane, maybe it's working how it's supposed to, or maybe it's whack. I need yall to tell me if this sounds like normal behavior or what. The popping out isn't, but what about the grinding into 4HI?

Typically you should be able to shift from 2Hi to 4Hi even while rolling, and vice versa. As far as shifting the transfer case into neutral, 4 LO, or back to 4 HI from N, im pretty sure you need to put the transmission in neutral first, otherwise it will grind. Considering you are having issues with the part time light, and it does seemingly correlate to when your t-case pops out of gear, I would definitely check linkage closely

And from underneath it seems to be perfect. Everything is tight, nothing bound up.
