I was 3 years old when I first rode in a Jeep. I sat in the back seat with the top off while my dad, a veteran of WWII and Korea, drove through the Texas Hill County making water softener deliveries for a chemical company. He was working four part-time jobs while trying to finish his college degree on the GI Bill. The owner of the chemical company sent him on the delivery errand and told him to take my mother and me with him for a weekend getaway. I never forgot the Jeep and always wanted my own.

In 2006, I bought a TJ and planned to keep it, so 13 years later the TJ and I are starting a new adventure.

I decided to last spring to make it my main vehicle, but t had a soft top and needed safety updating and security changes for road trips.

I checked out three after-market hard tops. After one false start and install, I checked the Jeep forums and read about the quality and workmanship in the hardtop made by BullDawg Mfg. in Hixson TN. I called the owner and asked if the hard top could be installed by the manufacturing team if I drove the TJ to Hixson. We agreed on a date for the install and I began the 3-day, 17-hour drive from TX across LA, MS, AL, and GA to TN. I pushed the TJ hard on its first, long highway trip and learned a lot about more work it needed when I returned home.

The BullDawg team was great! They went to work with surgical precision. In two hours, they removed the soft top and hardware, installed the new hard top (with great weather sealing), and gave me the keys to the back window locks. I could not believe the difference when I drove away.

I could not be happier with the install or the product or the BullDawg staff and management. The functionality and security of the hard top are exactly what I hoped to have when I began planning updates. What I didn’t expect because I bought the hard top sight unseen iis how great it looks, how strong it feels, and the great fit.

The final tests came on my way home. The top was quiet. Three full car washes (hit spilled paint driving at night on an interstate) and no leaks. But the best review happened when I stopped for gas in Texas in the home town where I grew up.

A car pulled in beside me and a woman in her 30’s and her eight-year-old son walked over to talk to me. Her son was tugging her by the arm and smiling at the Jeep. She said he told her, “That’s the one, that’s the one.” She said he loves your car and she asked if it was new. I said it was a 2006 but I was updating the exterior by replacing the chalky looking OEM fenders with new fenders from Extreme Terrain (another Jeep forum recommendation) and was on my home after having a new hard top installed in TN. Her son kept smiling at
the Jeep as she pulled him away to buy gas for their car. She said she was definitely planning to consider purchasing a new Jeep for both of them. When I arrived home, I rested my head on the steering wheel before noticing my neighbor. She was dancing around the car, waving her arms, and saying, “It looks great! It is beautiful.”

The BullDawg hard top makes all the difference to keep my TJ and I have no doubt an 8-year-old boy will have a Jeep someday. I know how it feels to sail down the highways and explore the world in a TJ.
