Just notice some slight thrust bearing noise and feel in neutral tonight (Throw out bearing for you guys) gears change smooth clutch smooth, how long have I got?

I might just order a complete clutch kit but dont want to just drop the box straight away if this is sort of normal for TJ 6 speeds.

Cheers

Advised by a mechanic at work that its not the Throw out bearing but the gears, He advised me to change gear oil with a premium brand, I had it ass about face :) the noise stopped when I pushed the clutch in Throw out bearing is the other way around.
Any recommendations on premium grade oil for an 06 6 speed.
Cheers

Redline ONLY!
To be honest, I never used it before my TJ. My 6 speed would NOT go into 6th. Almost as bad going into R. And 5th was very hit and miss. So I went and (because I knew better) put in Valvoline. It's what I've used for years and years and has always been a great choice.
Wheeeellllll... it was exactly the same. Old oil looked pretty new too. So I drained out the Valvoline, saved it for an old tractor or manure spreader gearbox, and poured in the Redline.
By the end of my road it was already better. Shifting was tighter, 5th was fine. And within a few miles I was hitting 6th like it was new. Reverse pops right in also. No more double (or triple) clutching to find it.
Don't know what's in the stuff. Could be Unicorn horn or Dragon tears, but what ever they blend in WORKS. Worth the extra $$. Never seen such a dramatic change in a gearbox just by oil brand, and I've been turning wrenches for over 40 yrs.

What size/type sockets do I need? the drain and fill plugs are square.

cheers
Just the 3/8” ratchet, no socket. If it’s not the 3/8”, it’s the 1/2”.

The drain plug on my 06 6speed takes a 17mm Allen head. If you have the same, but don't have the right tool (as most wouldn't) you can rig up a tool using (IIRC) a 3/4" head bolt as short as possible and weld a nut on at the other end to use on the drain plug. If I'm wrong about 3/4", it's close. Just go to the shop and find out what works for you.👍

Exactly what I did until I purchased the 17mm hex 1/2" drive socket.

Seems strange my 6 speed only takes 1.6 quarts and 5 speed takes 2.4 quarts? good for me anyway as the Redline MTL actually costs $46au a quart, picking it up tomorrow :)

thanks for the help people. :)

So OK the filler plug is smaller anyone have a size so I can buy both hex sockets tomorrow. Gearbox looks brand new from the skid plate up and filler plug looks as if its never been removed since factory! the filler plug has yellowish paint/thread locker on half the plug and matching on the box housing so has never been turned ( not a good sign) I have seen this before on new alloy parts I have bought that have a metal plug.

Good news is there is not a single bit of rust in this thing apart from a bit of surface rust "colour" on the pre cats and exhaust. This jeep has never been off road that's for sure, In Western Australia we get a lot of red dust and grey sand build up but this has none.

There looks to be a very slight leak from the gearbox drain plug but that may be oil leak travel from the main seal down the gearbox seam?

I at last have a bit of time off work now, 2 days work next week then I am off till 11th Jan so I can at start some maintenance.

Cheers

Different sizes on my '06, but I can't remember the exact size. Definitely smaller. You will need a full set of torx sockets for your TJ and I'm sure I used one of those to get the fill plug. The paint marks are from the factory to show that the gearbox has been filled. The drain plug was tight as hell to loosen on mine, tho it has had fluid changes before. Most will crank tight on a drain plug and a lot less on the fill plug. Hope this helps. Buying 1-use only tools sucks.
