Tents: how do you camp?

I’m a backpacker and prefer hammocking, but if the wife and kids join me we sometimes end up in places where you need a tent.

I recently started using this setup, and I’ve been really happy with it. You get two tents, and each tent can hold two cots, three if you have to. You have to stake out the awning for it to be stable. It all packs down to the size of a big sleeping bag plus poles. Price is good, well under $100. I’d recommend resealing all the seams. You have to figure with that price compromises were made. Walmart online.

I looked at an oztent, which is the Cadillac of this style tent but can’t justify the price. Good luck

This was at the Overland East gathering in Asheville, NC

What kind of tent is that?

^^^ I'm also curious as to what kind of tent that is. It looks like a pretty slick setup!

Its a "Standing room XL" four door tent held up by a wallymart canopy...

I've had it for about 2 years now... seems to be fairly good (chinese) quality; I did have to make 6" side strap extenders since the tent itself is roughly 9' x 9' and the legs of the canopy are more than 9.5 feet apart... Biggest benefit I can stand upright and streatch.

I tried many tents over the years; got tired of not being able to stand up straight in the tent during bad weather...
Wore out the first 9x9x6' dome, tried outfitter tents, then have had pretty good results with this;

I have this same set up, but have yet to use it. How do you haul the canopy? Mine wont fit in the back of my Jeep.

After removing (not folding) the back seat, this (supposedly 10x10, actually closer to 9.5x9.5)canopy, awkwardly, fits cross wise behind the front seats, in front of the wheel wells or length wise behind either front seat and the tailgate.
I had to downsize the load significantly when moving from the 2 door Explorer to the TJ; but it, mostly, still crams in there... (one of my friends still doesn't understand how)...
Note to self; take pics during the next load/unload cycle...
Enjoy!

That's what I do too. I have a Bass Pro 10'x10' canopy and it fits nicely cross wise behind the front seats with a pair of folding camp chairs on top of it.

...You need more stuff; there is too much room in there!...
(Part of this winter's project is to down size my camping load).

Enjoy!

I have been considering building another camping trailer but so far have managed to resist!
...removing the rear hitch to install (Suburban) tow hooks hasn't helped ....

Enjoy!

LOL!!! That's a pic of my TJ when I go ALONE! When I go with my wife we take the LJ. I think I have things covered though. I'm finishing off my off road trailer and should be all set for this summer and beyond. Bikes, kayaks ... and lots of junk!

I will have to try it again, I couldn't get mine to work. Mine is an ABC and I am pretty sure it is 10x10 and it is heavy as sin. I have a kendon trailer I could tie it to if I bring my quad but it would be nice to not have to bring the trailer if I am camping alone on a fishing trip. I really like the idea of the canopy tent. I am getting excited to use it soon.

Last question though what do you use to weight it down once it is set up?

Last time I went to the dunes I tied 2 corners to my truck and tied it to my tool box on the other side and it flipped over and slung my tool box across the parking area. Put a couple of scratches on my truck. Looking for a much better way to weight it down.

There are no holes in the canopy legs to stake it down?

Here is a pic of a canopy in the TJ the passenger seat is moved all the way forward. To allow the back door to shut the canopy has to be moved away from the wheel well enough to clear the hinge bump on the door.

If I can find some fresh batteries I will take a pic with the canopy cross wise in the Jeep, later.

To stake the canopy down I normally use the cheap nail type stakes from Harbor Freight pounded through the holes in the bottom of the legs (as lowranger mentioned). If high winds are expected I also use guy lines to the top corners of the canopy.

This canopy is a cheapie from wallymart and I would guess it weights 30-40 pounds.

Enjoy!
