Steering wheel off center

I just installed a new borgeson steering shaft in my 03 wrangler and it fixed but steering issues but now my steering wheel is not centered when straight. Not sure how it happened because I had the steering wheel locked but what is the easiest way to fix it? Any advice is appreciated

Super easy

Park your Jeep TJ with the tires as straight as you can. Your steering box is connected to the drag link via the pitman arm. We’re going to be adjusting the length of the drag link. Locate the adjuster sleeve on the drag link and loosen the bolts that hold the clamps together. You do not need to remove them.


Grab your pipe wrench and turn the adjuster sleeve until the steering wheel is as straight as you can. Once that is done you will need to tighten the bolts on the sleeve clamps back up and take a test drive. If you notice it’s still a bit off while driving, try again.

Here's how to check and adjust your own toe-in that also includes how to center the steering wheel as well as re-center the axle if necessary. With just a little care on your part with nothing more than a tape measure, a big set of pliers, and a wrench, you can easily set your toe-in with as much accuracy as an alignment shop can. Really.

Start after making sure the front axle is properly centered. That may involve adjusting the trackbar's length which can only be done if there's an aftermarket adjustable-length track bar installed. Or if the original OEM track bar is still installed and...

I had that problem and I took mine in for a front end alignment and they fixed the issue. My understanding is that there are different levels of shops that perform front end alignments. Some do basic and other shops do more advanced front end alignments. The steering wheel issue is a more advanced front end alignment to my understanding of the issue.

Any advice is appreciated

Take your wrench with you so you can stop and adjust on the fly.
Make small adjustments.
The clamps don't need to be super tight for a test drive.

With stock control arms, it's very simple and basic. It takes 10 minutes to get it as accurate as an alignment shop. I just did mine again when I replaced my ZJ tie rod and track bar.

Since you are up here in the Rust belt don't be surprised if the bolts are rusted shut. I just had this issue a few years ago and ended up replacing adjustment sleeve and the drag link due to rust welding the sleeve and drag link together
