Hi,
I have a 2013 Wrangler Unlimited with 52k miles. I started hearing some grinding noise, had a mechanic replace brakes and rotors which were down to the metal. When he took off my tire, he noticed seal on axel of my rear wheel was leaking. He took off hatch on axel to get in and saw the gears missing chunks of metal. I bought the Jeep brand new and low mileage. I took it to the dealership and of course my warranty expired 2 weeks ago. . Mechanic gave me a quote for rebuilt rear differential parts and labor $2,200. Does that sound reasonable? I’ve only taken my Jeep camping, Tahoe for snowboarding and Yosemite in the snow. No crazy 4x4ing. Seems weird for all that to break.

Just letting you know that while there are some members on here that own JKs, which is what you own, you'd more likely get better answers to your questions on a JK forum. This is a TJ (1997-2006) Jeep owners forum.

If anyone has input on @Bea's question, chime in...

Oh, thank you for pointing that out! I’m on my cell doing this so I didn’t notice. I will post this in the correct group. :-)

Or call and ask for the service manager to call you back. Chances are the axle seals have been leaking for a while (well before your two weeks ago) and lack of oil caused the issue. Dealers and service managers can work with Jeep for special allowances. Not saying it will work, but it might. I know where I work (a major construction/ag equipment manufacturer) they have things like this and make special allowances for things like this.

Note - you'll probably have better luck if you had all the service done at the dealer as well. Then you can put it on them as to why they didn't catch the leak before it caused catastrophic failure of your rear end.

If that doesn't work - time for a locker!
