Snow wheeling pics '24-'25

You talk about trying to reseat a bead... I wasn't as smart back then and had bought some steel rims for the Boggers that came on my TJ when I'd bought it.

This was my first trip out with these new rims and everyone had told me Boggers did good in the snow...

Trying to clean the mud out of the wheels so reseat the bead was a PITA....

I sold the tires & wheels not too long after that...



You could pull it and take it apart and see if it just needs a little cleaning?


Never heard of cleaning a starter before. I just assumed the oil leaks did a good job of protecting it :ROFLMAO:
Do you open them up? Hit it with the pressure washer?

Just like taking the motor on a winch apart... Or any other type of electrical motor. You've got an armature & stator & brushes. It could be a dead spot or it could just be dirty. Back when I was younger you rebuilt things instead of just replacing them.

I couldn't tell you what is a good brand to replace it with.

If he got nothing at all it probably is just the solenoid?

Why didn't you like the boggers? I can see how they'd be the wrong tire for a low hp rig.

When I had some my friends would joke that my truck sounded like a radial engine bomber coming in for landing,lol.

He didn't say what he tapped on exactly... So yes it could just be a solenoid...

As I've told my story more than once, my TJ came with 33x14x15 TSL Boggers on it... And had never been off-road in it's 5 years of life... Was owned by this big tittyd blonde in town. She just liked how they looked...
With the 4 cyl it might have been a lack of power to spin the tires but all I know was they didn't work for me. Part of it might have been the steel rims. Anything below 14psi & I would lose a bead. And like I said they didn't work for me in the snow. Now like srimes I had to use a strap to get them to seat on the bead.

Yep they sounded like a jet coming in for a landing BURRRRRUP or something like that.

And then everyone was yelling at me that I was gunna break my Dana 35...

I tapped both the starter motor and solenoid while I was down there. I was more in the "praying this works" state of mind :ROFLMAO:

If I could only air down to 14 these tires would suck too! I have a hunch that a lot of people's problems with swampers comes from running too much pressure. They have stiff sidewalls and need lower pressures than most to work right, AND they have a reputation for debeading easily. If they fall off the rim below 14 and don't start working until they're less than 7 of course you won't be happy with them!

Taking the starter apart then might save you some coin if it just needs to be cleaned... Of course it could be something else too.

Yep I think the steel rims weren't a GOOD idea. But I was DD the Jeep so I'd bought some A/T tires and had them installed on the aluminum rims it came with and the Boggers on the steel wheels. If I'd had beadlocks and could lower it them to 5-6 PSI then YES I might have liked them more. And yes I totally agree that ever TSL I've ever ran had stiff sidewalls...

These new M/T Baja Pros XS tires have a stiff sidewall also. I had to lower them to 5 PSI to get any flex out of them also.

A TJ can get up that line and maybe back in the day so could an LJ. Now the way its worn I don't think its possible for an LJ and Ive tried a few times.

That was 2002 or 2003 I don't remember but it was right after I'd bought the TJ.... I haven't been to Funny Rocks in over 10 years so I'm sure it's changed a lot...

I used an oversimplified model of tire height x width as a "floatation factor" when tire shopping. I'm sure it's at least somewhat valid, but also suspect it might overvalue width compared to height.

38x13.5= 513
35x15= 525

That's only a 2% difference, so the model suggests they should perform about the same. We should go snow wheeling some time and see how they compare. For science!

We've had snow here at my house the past 2 nights. Melted off during the day but still snowed.

I've never been snow wheeling through more than like, 2-3". Because I always go alone. You're kinda inspiring me to try to see what I can do and just bring a shovel and food, wonder if it'll snow again this year out here

So plan a trip and come join us...
We could find something.

I'm not quite as reckless as it looks. I just checked and where I almost got stranded was 12.3 miles by road back to my house. 4.5 miles as the crow flies! It'd be a long walk but I could if I needed too. I do pack a sleeping bag just in case, too. And while cell service is spotty in places it does work at many points.

Going out like I do I know it's only a matter of time until I need to call for a rescue or hike out. I accept that risk. If I didn't go alone I wouldn't get 1/10th as much as I do. And I just love it!

Was warm and the snow was wet, slick, and sticky. When backing up to bash I noticed that I could see my licence plate numbers :ROFLMAO:

We got bogged down pretty good in the spot that's always nasty, and where I got stuck last time and my starter stop working. Got close to the end and pulled cable, but the snow was so heavy the winch started stalling with the drum half-full. Reset with a recovery ring for more power, made more ground, went to reset again and the winch was dead!

Decided that's probably enough adventure for today, but we couldn't turn around yet. Buddy would pull me back to get me unstuck, and I kept bashing until I got free. Here we are turned around and ready to head back.

I was hoping to make it to power, but with a busted winch and getting a bit late in the day we called it. After driving back down we stopped to air up and I found the problem with the winch.

I put the winch ground on the side lug of my old optima battery. Apparently that isn't the best idea...

Yes, the winch on the side post of an Optima is a very bad idea. It is not designed for that type of amp load (as you found out).

Also, what’s the purpose of the switch on the ground circuit? If that is the only switch in the cicuit, it defeats the purpose of the switch, as there is still a live cable to the winch. More than that, if you disconnect the switch and engage the winch, it will find another ground path - which could be very bad.

Unless I’m missing something?
